I have a R3230. It seems that occasionally when I am typing all of a sudden the cursor jumps back to an area I have already typed and it begins inserting the letters from that point on.

I thought this must be cause of hitting a key or something by mistake. My buddy bought a R3440 and he asked me if this ever happened as it did with him as well.

Anyone else experience this or can anyone explain as I think it is just messy typing causing the issue but I am not 100% sure?

Sure you are not touching the touchpad causing the cursor to move? I do that on ocassion.

I was robbed by a sweet little old lady on a motorized cart and I didn't even see it coming.

That used to happen to me all the time in college with the library rented laptops. I agree it is due to the touch pad. I really like the laptop I just purchased though (Compaq R3000Z). It doesn't do that at all and the keyboard is really nice.
