Is there any compelling reason to choose one over the other such as build quality etc or should I basically just go with whichever I like the looks of better?

They are the same laptop man. Just go with the one that looks best to you.
Actually, the only difference between the two besides the case is that the zv6k has an infrared port (whoop de do who uses that anyway).

Pick the one that looks best to you. :hp:

They also vary WILDLY in terms of upgrade costs. Pull up the two side by side and upgrade 'em randomly. You'll notice that which one costs less will change depending on what you load it with. Some end up with a cheaper R4k, some with the zv6k. I fell into the latter category, so... it's on the way!

...provided it gets out of Europe. *grumblecurse*

Both are basically the same machine. I've seen sometimes the R4000 cheaper than the ZV6000 and vice versa.

The R4000 case looks thinner. Is it? Also is it lighter at all?

No, From what I have seen, they have the same thickness & weight. The Compaq is just more rounded in the edges & so might give the appearence of being thinner.

The Compaq looks thinner because of the flat sides. The rounded speakers at the front of the zv6k gives the illusion of it being "fatter", but they are indeed both the same size.

I never understood who's using those speakers to listen to music with the thing shut anyway. Maybe through the headphone jack, but not the speakers. That's like watching a DVD with one of those little B&W portable TVs.

I wish these models were lighter like the V2000 series. I would like the power of the Athlon 64 instead of the Turion and the bigger screen.

I have done it before, but the sound was of course real low because my speakers aren't on the front of the machine. But if I'm not using the screen for anything I want to just close it for some reason.

honestly, price depends mainly on your upgrades. I got a r4k with these specs

    AMD Athlon 64 4000+
    512 mb ram (1x 512)
    ATI Radeon 200m 128mb
    80gb 5400 rpm hdd
    Dual layer DVD burner

    15.4" widescreen w/ BrightView

My r4k cost $600 less than the comperably equipped zv6000

I just returned an r4000 and exchanged it for the zv6000. The main reason for the return was to go back to a matte screen (which isn't relevant here), but also I changed models because of the rounded front of the zv6000, which I decided was going to be more comfortable for my wrists. The r4000 is pretty square at the front and the top of the keyboard area is not real close to the table top (or whatever the notebook is resting on). It's not something everybody thinks about, or needs to for that matter, but it made a difference to me. I did find right now that the zv6000 was the same or a little less as long as you didn't go above a +3500 processor. The upgrade to a +3800 or +4000 processor on the r4000 was considerably more affordable than the zv6000 - don't know why - so I stayed with the +3500 processor for the exchange. Good luck!
