Got a question. I have a new laptop for a week now. It’s working very well. However, I noticed that when it’s really quiet you can here this high pitched (but very faint) noise. It has to be really quiet in the house (room) to hear this. But only when the laptop is plugged into the AC adapter and to the wall! It is so quiet that when the laptop is on you can not hear that noise unless you move your ear inch from the place where the core is connected. I don’t mine that noise because you cannot hear it while normal use. But it’s there. When I run on the battery or the laptop is off and not plugged into the power then there is no noise. I was just wondering if it is normal or something is not right and I should take it back to the store.

Again, When it is totally off and plugged into the wall.

I also called HP support, lady didn't help me much, told me that if it bugs me i should take it back.

I don't really want to because they don't have any more in the stock and i like this laptop. It's not the noise that makes me nervous it's more the fact that there is that noise.

I heard the same thing when I first got my R3000. It is the power pack. Next time you here it, put your ear down to the power pack.

Power pack you mean that small box in the middle of the cable? If so, it's not that for sure. I did listen to it many times. It is something inside the laptop right where the cable is going into the laptop. And as soon as you take out the cable from the laptop the noise is gone and when you plug it back in that sound is back also. I don't even think that noise is there when the laptop is on, i turned off the monitor and the hd, laptop wasn't in standby yet and it was quiet so i could listen to the noise but it wasn't there, but as soon as i closed the laptop and it went into stanby the noise started. So I am getting this noise when the laptop is in standby or totally off.

    Taken from HP's Support Web-Site:

    DESCRIPTION
A high pitched or buzzing sound may occur when using the notebook PC.

"This is normal behavior when the notebook PC is used in certain power configurations. Under certain power connfigurations the power supply capacitors in the notebook can resonate, producing an audible sound."

    SOLUTION
Reduce the sound by selecting a different power scheme.
You can adjust power configurations through Start > Control Panel > Power Options. Power saving schemes such as Portable/Laptop and Max Battery yield the best results.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    ISSUE:
The AC Adapter of the HP or Compaq Notebook PC makes a hissing, and/or crackling noise and may feel warm to the touch.
This is more prevalent after the adapter has been connected to AC power for a period of time.

    SOLUTION:
AC Power adapters do emit high frequency sounds (15 kHz-20 kHz) that may be misunderstood as hissing or crackling noise. This is normal and not an indication of a failing adapter.
The temperature of the adapter also may feel warm to the touch. This is normal operation too.

That explains the AC adapter, noise in my computer comes out from the laptop itself right where the AC input is at the back of the laptop.

Well I'm guessing that the power supply capacitors are located right where you plug in the AC.....so... the noise is normal...(see my above post)
