Yes, you can play music with the lid closed. You just need to change some options in the power management menu. To do this...

Goto->Control Panel(Classic view)->Power Options->Advanced Tab->Under Power Buttons, set it to do nothing when the lid is closed.

Try playing a music file and see if it works.

Please p roceed with the query Anthony.

    Anthony G
im ok just want to know if there is a way to have the notebook still operate while the sreen is closed? (e.g. can i have windows media player playing music while case if closed)

    Viole
Anthony yes we can turn the LCD panel off while we run programs on it so, that we can save power.

    Viole
    Right click on desktop->Properties->screen saver->power

    Anthony G
well i want to kin da use it like a walkmen if that makes more sense...

    Viole
Now under power management properties select the idle time after which the display should be off..

    Viole
Yes Anthony that is the only way we can keep the processor running and keep the display off.

    Anthony G
well now im at the power options properties bunch of tabs which one do i go to for power managment ?

    Viole
Anthony under power scheme tab do you see the option like turn the monitor off i nformation

    Viole
Now select the time after which you want the display off.

    Viole
You can select it from the drop down button.

    Anthony G
just so im clear when i close the notebook i will still be able to hear music ? when i do this operation

    Viole
    Yes exactly Anthony.

    Viole
In order for the display to be off you need to keep the notebook idle for the amount of time you specified in the power scheme.

    Anthony G
ok so in the power schemes tab i am going to change the drop down turn monitor off never ?...

    Viole
If you do that Anthony the monitor will be in on condition for ever.

    Viole
You need to specify the time such as turn the monitor of after 15 minutes or so.

    Anthony G
Viole: Now under power management properties select the idle time after which the display should be off.. Viole: Yes Anthony that is the only way we can keep the processor running and keep the display off. *** is where i get confussed

    Anthony G
oh ok so im going to close the lid now and you should still be here when i open it right

    Viole
    Yes Anthony exactly.

    Anthony G
    ok one sec

    Viole
In order for you to listen from the system the processor and other components on the motherboard should run.

    Viole
    No problem Anthony.

    Anthony G
nope that didnt work sorry shut it down

    Anthony G
    music stopped

    Viole
Ant hony if you close the laptop the power button will be switched off.

    Viole
So, it is like shutting down the system.

    Viole
We need to keep the laptop opened.

    Viole
Otherwise we can shut the LCP panel partially so that, the power button wont be switched off.

    Anthony G
yes that is correct but i want to use it when its closed is that possible

    Viole
Keeping the system idle in the sense, we should not touch mous e or key board for the period of time that, we specified in the power scheme.

    Viole
Yes Anthony it is not possible to use the laptop in a completely closed state.

    Anthony G
    ok now i understand thanks

    Viole
    You are welcome Anthony.

    Viole
Is there any thing else that, I can assist you with?

    Anthony G
    nope

    Viole
Thank you for using HP Total Care and giving us an opportunity to serve you through Real-Time Chat. A copy of our c hat session will be e-mailed to you shortly.

    Anthony G

    Hi there
I have the same laptop R4225CA. I love it. I don't know if you had a chance to look at my post here it titled:
Compaq R4225CA high pitched (but very faint) noise?!?!?

I went and exchanged for another one it turned out that this one is making the same high pitched noise when it's off and plaged into the ac adapter and wall. The new one i got does the same thing, i will live with it cause you can only hear it when you are like 2 feet away from it and when is dead quiet in the room (my dad can't hear it even inch from the laptop) I guess i am extrimly sensitive.

The thing is that with the new one that i exchanged for i think THINK! that this one is a bit lauder then the first one i had. I mean when it is on and in the windows (not when the other fans are on but when the main one is one, which is always on. I know you will hear this air blow kind of, but i didn't notice this on the first one as much as i did on the one i have now. I am thinking it could be, but i think it is making this unnecessary noise. Would be nice to compare it with other one while they are next to eachother, but in the store it is not possible, and i don' t know anyone who has the same one. Other then that i like it alot.

Bytheway, do you know that you can add another 128MB to your video card by changing it in the BIOS setting?!

Hello. First, i'm like you AG i've visited this site for lots of tips on my laptop, and i've now registered so i can post. First of all, i know these replies are a little late but you never know, someone may come across this and it could help.
    1. I have not noticed any kind of noise when this unit is off. (the compaq r4000, or to be more precise the compaq r4225ca) I'm also musician so i turned on my acoustic tuner to see if it was picking up any kind of sound from it. but no.
Although when the unit is on, it can get fairly noisey compared to other notebooks that i have access to. (the fans and such)

    2. I'd also like to say that yes this notebook is a very good buy. For the price and what it offers, i don't think you can beat it, from that perspective. Although i did receive this over a year ago as a present, it's good as new. (and trust me i'm not easy on it)

    3. I'd like to post one tip though that can help with the noise, and performance. As i mentioned it's over a year old, and as time went by, i noticed that it's performance was going downhill. I know this thing inside out, and i noticed that slowly the load times on certain games and programs slowed down, and overall processing time, and processor use was increasing. I'm also an avid Wolfenstein Enemy Territory player. A good online multiplayer game. Slowly it started to lag intermittently, though very badly. (we're talking below 10fps) Say in a one hour session of gaming, it would do that about 3 to 4 times for about 3 mins each time (give or take). As an online gamer, this is unacceptable. I tried everything. Going through my bios allocating the additional 128 mb of memory for the video card, and searching endlessly through forums. I've noticed some people complaining about the heat that this thing gives off. After keeping that in mind, that made a lot of sense as to what was happening with my gaming experience. The CPU overheats, and it's performance is then reduced to cool it. (in simple terms) i've also read of one person keeping an ice pack under his laptop to have it work properly. Although that would be a short term solution, again this is unacceptable. I'm past my warranty, so i took the notebook apart. When i did this, (believe it or not) i found that the heat sinks and the cooling fan areas were COVERED in dust and lint. Not just a layer, but i pulled out something comparable to the stuff you pull out of your lint trap doing laundry. I put it all back together, and now it runs like new. or better than new even. I know this is just because slowly i got used to the bad performance, and now it seems lightning quick, but either way, it's like having a new computer again.

So if you experience the same problems, flip your notebook over so you're looking at the bottom. begin taking out all exposed screws around the edges, the ram slot, the HD, and the CD/DVD rom. the casing comes off fairly easy, although there is a wire that connects the whole bottom casing to main part. It looks like a powersupply for the fan. Easily removed. Once you've done this, you'll notices the heat sinks near the back, and the fans, (and if you've used this notebook alot, then it will be coverered in dust) also there's another metal cover, taht protects yet another fan, so remove that clean it all out, and put it back together. I know this seems like very blase instructions but onceyou begin you'll see how easy it is.

So before looking to upgrade, or shop for new notebooks and or parts. Before cursing HP for making inferior products that overheat, and placing ice packs under your notebook, look into a little housekeeping. Clean it out. Honestly, i've noticed a major difference in performance. I wish that i had bench marked all the previous performances before i cleaned it out to prove it, but you'll just have to see for yourself. All of MY problems were solved just by emptying out the lint trap. :)
