I'm looking at getting a Compaq Presario v2000, but I wanted to get some people's opinions on the options first. I have decided that I would like to get this laptop after reading several reviews, but I'm not sure if I should go with the Intel based system or an AMD. At the moment I can get a similarly configured systems with the Intel based about $200 less than the AMD (with the rebates and free shipping). I am just wondering if there are any differences in the two and I should pay the extra for the AMD.

I'm looking for a laptop that is easy to carry around. I'll be using it mostly for school work and the like, watching some DVD's and listening to music. I'm not a big gamer so graphics aren't terribly important.

There is also the option to have a celeron m rather than a pentium m and I am curious what the performance differences are between the two.

    Thanks for any input.

Both the AMD based and Intel based systems are very similar and expect the battery life to be in the same range with the Intel based V2000's having the edge. The only noticable difference is the graphics card, the AMD based systems use ATi 200m whereas the Intel based systems use the GMA900. The ATi 200m is almost 20 - 30% more powerful than the GMA900. Since you are not a gamer, it really does not matter and either one should serve your needs well. I would recommend the cheaper option.

Also as an FYI - HP is releasing the V3000 as an update to the V2000 pretty soon(within the next few weeks). It should have updated specifications and have options of both Intel & AMD dual core processors, but ofcourse as with any new model it will be more expensive at first than the previous model. The new model looks good and depending on your budget and if you want the latest model you might want to wait for that one.

    Shouldn't that be 200% - 300%?

It looks like AMD is pricing the Turion X2's very aggressively, so the price premium for V3000z's may not be too bad. It also has the GeForce 6150 integrated GPU that's slightly better than the ATI 200M and it has gigabit Ethernet.

If your going to go Celeron M option, either step up to Pentium M or even go AMD with the Turion processors. The Celeron M doesnt have some of the capabilites of the mobile processors and its worth paying extra for the better processor capability.

Honestly i would go AMD, simply for the graphics card. Watching HD videos that ive download already seems to be slow. Imagine how slow it will be if you got the intel version, if its 20-30 percent slower then the ATI GPU.
