"Extreme Graphic 2" is Intel marketingspeak for "crappy shared memory video". Any dedicated video card is going to beat the snot out of it. It's fine for browsing the web, word processing... but not gaming. I'd pick something else.
-
as i said..i just play Counter strike Condition Zero and WC3...so Intel Extreme graphics 2 can't play CS???[
][
which one i'd pick now ??? -
It's true that the video is subpar. But, I would take a look on Intel's website and search under the 855 GME chipset. There are links that take you to games that they know are compatible. Here's the URL:
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-010471.htm.
It's a decent list, but doesn't have the latest ones, not yet at least.
I've ordered the HP DV1000 for myself, but have yet to receive it. I play some games, but am not into hardcore gaming. Don't really have time for it. I think that this unit will provide enough power for light gaming. Good Luck! -
mini review of dv:
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/pocketreview.php?reviewId=582 -
laptop magazine has a review of the dv1000 which is the same thing just more multimedia.
-
i think choose a laptop with Great Graphic card to Play CS is very important!!!the fps of CS in the game will be much lower.Graphic mem will be divided from mem.my laptop is compaq nx9040.the Max of Graphic mem which is from Physical Memory can be 64Mb.so a good Graphic Card is very important to you
-
Even for light gaming I think you should stay away from the share video mem. Although you call yourself not a hardcord gamer but the games you listed need a decent video card to have decent quility on the game.
-
I received my V2000 today... but, unfortunately, I don't own any games. This thing is definitely fast enough for normal office apps and even Photoshop and other more "special" programs.
You do lose 64MB of however much RAM that you think you have to the shared memory though. My BIOS shows that I only have 480MB (weird, I know).
Based on my preliminary use of this laptop, I would suggest that gamers stay away. It's just not meant to be a gaming machine... but it's definitely great for student-use (non-gaming student) or for a work-related computer. -
Glad to see you got your V2000. So how does the screen look for regular viewing and DVD viewing? How is the weight? Probably getting the HP DV1000 myself. Did you get the Brightview option?
Thanks,
Casey -
Yeah I'm interested in the screen too. I just ordered mine on the 20th, with the briteview display. I do a lot of graphics type stuff (photoshop, painter, open canvas ect.) and I figured it was the way to go.
Also, do you think it will be problem to find a case for this thing? The dimensions are a little different from most notebooks out there because of the 14inch widescreen.
Oh, and if you get a chance, can you snap some pictures? I really want to see what this thing looks like in the real world, not just the images they have in that gallery (they're all 3d renders, not an actual comp.) -
To sublimation,
I'd like to ask what are your reasons for ordering this? I know the graphics card is intel built-in which is only shared up to 64mb. You mentioned that you do a lot of graphics work. Is the graphics card that's included good enough to handle the graphics work you mentioned?
I really like the DV1000 but i'm reluctunt to buy it til i get more info about the capabilities of the intel shared graphics card. I plan to do a lot of amatuer video editing with my videocam. Do u think the graphics card can handle this? -
I don't think the SMA graphics will be a problem. I don't want a portable gaming machine, just descent 2-D graphics, and from what I've heard about the Pentium M, even with the shared memory I have no worries. I'm not going to be running Maya or 3ds Max on this thing, just stuff for painting/sketching.
My real reason for getting this laptop was size/weight/power/cost/looks. It's just a cool looking notebook, for a reaonsable cost, with good power in terms of buisness apps (word, excel, internet), and low weight. I was looking at the X1000/zt3000, and while more powerful with their dedicated graphics cards, I've held them with the battery, and they way about as much as my old notebook, which I hated carrying around all day (and big with the wide screen display). I was also looking at the averatec 3200 which is a whole pound less than the v2000 and cheaper, but it didn't have the power or battery life I wanted.
So I settled on the V2000 after about 3months of research ( I know it hasn't been out that long).
here are the specs I ordered
Pentium M centrino 1.6mhz (lower power consumption than the faster chips, and still a Dothan with 2mb L2Cache, unlike the 1.5ghz 705 they offer)
1x512 MB ram (pc2700 I think)
[40 gig hard drive
8xDVD rom ] I didn't max the storage space for a couple of reasons - I have a ram drive, so I don't need CDR ability to move data around. I also have a portable USB2.0 hardrive, so I can back up data by moving it over to my desktop. Plus HP/Compaqs usually come with 4200 rpm drives, so I'll probably upgrade in the future (and there are some 100GB laptop drives coming out... might only be SATA though)
Wireless b/g
Britescreen display (thanks for the good pictures fishcube!)
This is not a desktop replacement and I don't expect it to be one, just a portable machine to get school/work stuff done.
-
I do not believe that your grafix card is the limiter with video editing. You want LOTS of RAM and a big cpu
-
I just ordered a Compaq v2000 tonight, custom configured. I didn't notice any option to select BrightView and I'm wondering what you guys are talking about. Did I miss something? I'm aware of BrightView on the HP dv1000 but not on the v2000. If someone has some info on how to specifiy BrightView on the Compaq let me know so I can contact HP and get it changed right away.
Thanks!! -
BigAlec,
Couple of days ago Compaq v2000 offer BrightView and last to days for some reason they changed their option.
Im waiting for more users opinion and Ill order one. I have currently zx5000 with BrightView and I love it. So who knows what they are thinking?
Regards

I'm a member of student Discount program.
I just need this Laptop for light programming and wifi interent serving. I WOULD rather play my America's Army game in my PC, cause you know the reason (Graphic Card SUCKS in this laptop).

Either Compaq already shipped my order or they shipped just the 3 year service agreement (yeah, because that makes lots of sense) but apparently SOMETHING shipped today a mere 12 hours after ordering. If they built it by now and I get it on Monday I'll be shocked. Here's the config when the notebook finally gets here...
- 1.8G Pentium M
- 1G RAM (2x 512)
- 60GB Harddisk
- 802.11G Integrated
- WinXP Pro
- MS Office SBE
- 3 Year Accidental Damage Warranty
- $2200 aproximately -
Oh I guess I left out the DVD/CDRW combo and 6 cell battery. Oh an dthe productivity ports and all that. Oops.
-
yea it is the service agreement
-
I ordered the HP dv1000 configured w/ a student discount. I ordered mine on 9/15 and it recently shipped with expected delivery on Oct. 11th coming from Shanghai. Definitely the BrightView is worth it (go to best buy and you can see the difference) but consider it does use battery depending on the settings for it. This will be my first laptop and I chose this because of the price and the features. Dv1000 is basically the Compaq V2000 as I understand it.
-
I've heard it mentioned before on this forum that the briteview improves display brigheness, and if I may paraphrase, that this may actually improve battery life because brightness can be turned down more. I don't have any data which I can site to support this but it does make sense.
Oh and I got my service agreement the other day 2-3 weeks before the expected delivery of my laptop. The thing that bothers me is
1. The warranty is from date of purchase, even though I'm not getting the computer for almost a month afterward.
2. The service agreement says it's best to send it in at most 10 days after purchase, but it requires the Serial number form the laptop and I have another week or so before I get that. Anybody else deal with this? -
same oppinions on the service agreement.
I want some pics of a v2000 -
http://www.notebookreview.com/imageGallery.asp?product=v2000
Here is the gallery link from the article a few weeks back. They are all CG shots but do show how cool this thing looks. From what I've heard over on the Andantec forums, the tones are a bit more extreme, with the silver body being the metalic silver on the ZT3000 and the top and bottom being black. Very much an improvement over the DV1000 in my opinion. -
yea I want to see real pics, allready seen those

Thanks Alot.
I haven't send my rebates yet. I was afraid that i would get rejected. But now i will apply for $100 spring break rebate.
Any suggestions???
Should i do it online???
Thanks
p.s. I'm still waitting for my laptop.
Almost everyday i check the delivery status. Damn it, they didn't ship it yet. -
Finally Shipped! Well, it's at a Fedex warehouse in Shang Hai, so who knows when it will leave, but atleast it's actually moving! The estimated ship date was October 4th, if that gives you any indication of when they will ship yours. I just went for the free shipping though, so it could still be a week.

Estimated delivery date is Oct 20, 2004 by 10:30AM, but im sure i will get it sooner then that. I live in New York City.
I just can't wait to recieve my V2000.
I will update you with my V2000 when i get it.
Some questions>>>
I want to buy a case from hp for my V2000, any suggestions?????
I was thinking of getting the Targus® Top Messenger notebook case
(PM464A). But they are out of stock.
Also i want to get a mouse or a mini mouse, and a flash drive(USB jump drive 128MB or higher).
Anyone know any good deals either in HPSHOPPING.COM or any other website, please respond.

I'm still debating whether or not I should get a 6cell battery. I ordered the 12 cell, and though bigger (slightly heavier) the increased life and the tilt (I like that) seem worth it (especially for only 25$ more). I figure if I'm going AC I don't need the battery and can save weight that way, and if I'm going battery it's good to know I don't have to worry about life, even with heavy use. Errrggg. Choices. How much did that 6cell set you back? Looking at LiIon batteries for HP, prices seem to range from 70$ for generic up over 100$ for name brand.
-
Yeah my estimated delivery date is 10/20, which I hope is total bull plop. These last 10 days have crawled by, and I sure don't want to wait another 20! Hopefully it's just Fedex covering their butt and it will be here soon; though it's status hasn't changed since yesterday morning...

Is there any store in NYC that might have the Compaq V2000 laptop on display? I have tried going to J&R and CompUSA in hopes of seeing and feeling the computer before buying it, but I haven't been able to find it yet. Is it too new?
I saw the press photos of this computer & it looks awesome. I have a few questions though. Hopefully you guys might be able to answer them. Thanks to advance.
- Will 1GB memory be enough & fast enough for me to play Sims 2, use Adobe Photoshop, and edit some ocassional videos?
- Compaq claims this is a widescreen 14", so does that mean the screen will be flatter? Do you know the exact measurements of the screen (using length & height). My current laptop is a Compaq Presario 1600S that's going on 5 years old already and even that measured 14.4" wide.
- If I upgrade to the wireless internet, does that mean I can bring my computer out to somewhere that supports wi-fi & I would be able to use their connection for free? Do I need to buy additional equipment or software to use that?
- Lastly, in real life, does this computer really look very nice? I'm sort of insane to be judging a laptop by its cover huh []

V2000 is kinda new in the market. I have already checked ciruit city and Best Buy. They don't have it.
I will write a long review when i get my V2000 next week. Till then now you can check the preferences online at hp.com.

I am 95% tempted to order this laptop this week without waiting for some critics to review it....oh, I really want it! I have some questions though.
What is the different between Intel Graphics Card & Intel Graphics Card with Productivity ports?
And how bad is this laptop's graphics card? Would I be able to upgrade the video card myself if I needed to? I hardly play any graphics intensive games at all, but I would really like this laptop to be able to run Sims 2 without any problems. It appears that Sims 2 requires a lot of resources (I looked at amazon.com for the system requirements and they said 2.0ghz processor, but the highest option I have in this laptop is 1.8ghz.
I don't have any pc computer. My laptop would be my main computer.
Thanks!
-
The different between the two graphics options is that the productivity ports offer the following:
A multi card reader for Memory Stick, Memory Stick pro, SD, xD, Smart Media, and Multi Media type memory cards. It does not read Compact flash, but that's okay since PMCIA readers are like 10 bucks.
The productivity ports also include an S-Video out port so you can hook this to your TV and view DVDs/ presentations through it.
The last fearture of the productivity ports version is an expansion port for a dock. It's basically a big sled you can plug the notebook into to use it more easily on your desktop and includes more USB, and probably some legacy ports.
The only reason I opted for the productivity ports was for the S-Video out.
If you want this laptop for Sims2 look elsewhere. This is not, repeat not! a gaming notebook. The intel extreme graphics are fine for watching movies, 2D applications like photoshop or painter and the like, but definitely not for gaming. While the intel extreme graphics chipsets are supported by the game, the website for the game says you need atleast a 2.0Ghz processor. The centrino models are usually equivalent to a 2.0Ghz + Pentium 4, but you should seriously think about getting a ZT3000, or RT5000 instead if you want a game machine. This computer is meant to be a portable buisness/school machine. -
Thanks for all the detailed explanations. The reason I am glued to this laptop because I love the way it looks (a mac imiation [
]). The Compaq R3000 feels so heavy.
I usually don't play any other games that are graphic intensive like the games my brother plays. But Sims 2 looks like something I might want to play. The other things I normally do on my computer is just to watch movies, go online, some simple adobe photoshop, listen to music.
I will however listen to your advice & go read up on the R3000...but it's gonna be hard to get me convinced...I love the way the V2000 looks.
At the very beginning when I was looking, I wanted to get a Sony laptop, but Sony's new laptops don't even look as nice as the ones I saw about 2 years ago...and they're thicker too.
-
Some addtional question:
Would I be able to upgrade my video card on the V2000 if I wanted to?
And if I change my selection to a 2.0Ghz memory, how is that different from a 1.0ghz memory?
Thanks! -
the sims2 will work fine on this computer.
-
Does Sims 2 seems to lag on this computer though even if it works? What configuration do you have?
Thanks! -
I think you mean GB instead of GHZ. GHZ refers to the processor speed and the 1-2 GB refers to the maximum ammount of RAM you can put in the computer. The intel graphics chip is integrated into the mother board, not into a mini PCI card like other notebooks with dedicated graphics, so it can NOT BE UGRADED. I know it sucks, but that's part of the price you pay for weight/heat/battery life.
Like I said, the website for the game says it supports the intel graphics chipset so it may indeed work with lots of details off. You may want to be safe and go for the 1.7 or 1.8Ghz Centrino processor and get as much ram as you can. It suggests 512 MB I think so make sure you have that much. Remember that the real issue is the graphics chip/card, as it is the main limiting factor in most of todays newer games. Try searching online for people who have used a laptop with similar specs for running Sims2 (especially with the Intel Extreme Graphics 2) to gauge how it runs. If you contact tech support for the game, they may have some information on how it runs on such a machine as well. -
I have the dv1000 1.6Ghz Centrino processor 512 memory. the sims2 will self install to the lowest settings and it does not lag at all. the games looks real nice.
-
Sweet. I also just heard on the Anandtech forums that Counter Strike runs really well on this machine. I guess pretty much any game that doesn't need Hardware T/L will do pretty nicely. There ya go Betty, another V2000 recruit.
Oh and you were saying that this laptop reminds you of the iBook? I don't know if you've seen the real world pictures but it is black on top and bottom, and silver on the inside. Kinda like an oreo cookie. -
Oh boy, I might just be ordering tonight! I haven't seen the computer in real life before, but with the computer opened, it looks a lot like the ibook!
I hear that the top of the laptop (the black part) gets fingerprints easily; is that true?
I think the R3000 is a chunkier oreo []
-
Well going on day 15 of my V2000 adventure. It's now in Alaska, so hopefully will get here before the end of the week~! That's wierd about the fingerprints though. Other HPs with the matte plastic don't seem to have a problem. No biggie though. Can't wait!!!!
I ordered the briteview display which may have been a setback in terms of shipping time. From what I've read it's worth the wait though. -
Good News.
MY V2000 is in New York (MASPETH NY). I might get it today or tomorrow. The estimated delivery date is still Oct. 20th.
I saw a picture of V2000 with a 12 cell lithuim battery. It looks awkward. The battery sticks out from the bottom and keeps the keyboard a little tilted. I Ordered a 12 cell battery with my laptop[V].
Can't wait to get em...
