    Hey Everyone,

    I posted a similar thread as this under "hardware" but thought I would go straight to the HP/Compaq peoples!

    Basically, I'm looking at the Compaq Presario V2305CA (The CA may be due to me being in Canada?)

    Anyway, has anyone bought this? Anyone have an opinion on it?

    Note: I only need this to do basic stuff...I'm a non-gamer, non-music-downloader, etc...I'm a broke college kid!

    If anyone needs specs to have an opinin:
    * 6-in-1 card reader
    * 14" WXGA BrightView LCD screen
    * AMD Mobile Sempron 3000+ 1.8Ghz, 128K L2 1600MHz FSB
    * 512MB
    * 60GB 4200rpm hard drive
    * Windows XP Home
    * DVD-Rom/CD-RW combo drive
    * 802.11b/g wireless LAN
    * 10/100 Ethernet; 56K V.90 modem
    * USB 2.0, 1 S-video ports
    * 128MB ATI Radeon Xpres 200M IGP graphics

    Now, I have no clue what half of this means. But your advice or review would be wonderful. THANK YOU!!!!!

    Thats not a bad system.

    I think you would be better off with a ML Turion chip rather then the Sempron and more L2 cache also it has no bluetooth and its windows home but those can be worked around or improved.

    How much are they asking for it?

    HP's DV1000 and its equilvalent Compaq V2000 are good college notebooks, I think you'll be satisfied with it.

    They're asking $899.99 CAN...so around $720 US. Its a good price for here...I'm slowly finding that we aren't cut very many deals in the great white north haha!

    Another note: I have a HP desktop that I would leave at home. So anything "big" could be done with that. :)

    Thats a good system for the price thats for sure.

    You probably want to make sure its the 12 cell battery if you need to use it away from outlets alot. Its not the best but I know what its like to be a broke student and for the price its pretty good.

    hey dude, i know what you mean about not knowing anything about them.. i went today and bought the compaq presario v2305ca notebook and i love it! i was looking at other ones on the net and sending them to my friend who knows ALOT about computers, then i sent him the website for the compaq and he said it's awesome.. so i went and bought it and it really is!
    im a student too.. so i was worried about pricing but it wasnt too bad.. and you said it was 899 for you which is alot cheaper than i paid so you've got a good deal.. who are you dealing with? is there a website that you could email me..
    anways.. it offers a lot including dvd usage and cd burning.. so for that price it's wicked..

    I bought on BB one of these for school on sept. 05.
    The dvd/cdrw drive is not as good as it should be. It continously goes back to PIO mode, failing to playback dvds or aborting program installations from cd. This makes the hdd and the cdrw to work slooooooow without warning.
    Compaq support says it is a software problem, so they do not change the drive even under warranty. I solve the problem using some advices I found on cdfreaks and a vb script someone wrote for it. I guess it is a pseudo-defective drive (too sensitive to media imperfections and unable to read some media brands). My usb external dvdrw could read without problem any dvd or cd the laptop drive could not.
    The keyboard is very flimsy.
    My advice: stay clear of compaq v2***. Poor performer series.

    you can get the v2570 for around 800$Cad methinks

    I agree about the cd drive. I've had installation problems before, but I do disagree about the flimsy keyboard. Though I've never tried a laptop with a really good keyboard touch, I'd say the keyboard on teh compaq v2000z is very stiff and well built.

    www.futureshop.ca has the v2570

    HP's CD/DVD drives tend to be picky. Mine for example, won't write multisessions correctly on cheaper disks...
    Other than that the V2000z series is very successful as well as popular.
