Any good or bad comments on the Compaq V2312US.
I know that this unit has shared video, but is the video performance ok for basic non-3d games, eg. not Doom 3, etc.
Does the Turion processor produce less heat and have better batt. life than the older AMD64 used by HP? Not so much in general but in the HP units.
Thanks
P.S. This unit is on sale at "Circuit City" for $750

I was looking at this model too. It's basically the same as the 2311 but with a DVD burner. People in general seem to like the V2000.
specs are here...

I just bought this last night but it was out of stock so HOPEFULLY on Friday it will come in.
A buddy of mine works for CC and is the head tech guy at his CC and he said it is a great laptop. The battery lasted about 2 hours of me surfing the internet straight, with music playing.
I can't wait to recieve mine! -
I have the V2311US, it has a DVD reader CD writer. I've had mine for a month and really like it. I use it daily. I use RMClock and installed 2GB of RAM in mine. The video looks real good but it's not very powerful for games.
That's a good price. I got mine for $699AR at Best Buy, I would have paid $50 more for a DVD burner. -
Get the 12 cell battery for very good battery life.

Hi there,
I just bought this from CC, and am very happy with it. But I have a question,
It is supposed to come wtih 512mb of ram
but when I go to "my computer" and "view system information"
it shows 384 MB of RAM
i ssomething wrong with mine, or did I not get the right specs?
it is my first laptop, so help is appreciated. -
128MB of RAM is being dedicated to the shared memory graphics card. 512-128=384. You can change this setting from the BIOS (most likely [F12] or [Del] at the "HP" logo when you first power on your machine), but you'll see 3D-intensive performance degrade slightly.

thank you for your info. i am not very computer literate as you can tell.
i use the laptop only for word processing and internet surfing.
i do watch some movies on it, and i watched the first one today and quality was great.
could you tell me how much of a difference the movies would be..if i switched it all to 512...?
also would you be able to tell me a bit more in detail how i can change it?
i would appreciate the help -
Sam,
The video memory in this unit is shared with system memory. If you have 512MB of system ram and 128MB of video ram that would give you 384MB of usable system ram as Lowlymarine indicated.
Are you asking if you can put all the memory to video (512MB of video memory) or are you asking if you can put all the memory to system (512MB of system memory)? On these systems, you can't unallocate all the video memory. I believe in some cases, it can go as low as 8MB (when you're just using word apps) and can increase upto 128MB (when playing games). You might be able to make changes to the allocation amount in the BIOS (F10 for HP's), but it's best to leave it on auto. If you want more system ram, you'll have to add more memory to the system.
Having more video memory or more system ram should not affect DVD playback, maybe if you had more memory, but 384MB should be fine. Are you asking because you're having performance problems when watching DVD's? If so, it may not be related to the memory, could be other factors (drivers, software, etc...).

If you go into the bios via F10 on boot you can lower the amount of ram dedicated to video down to 32mb

VENOMBITE,
I am not having any performance issues with dvd or with the computer. I feel since I don't play games, I would rather have the 512 mb of ram dedicated to the system.
I just hope lowering the video ram to 32mb like Alpha FOx (thanks for the tips on how to do it), doesn't effect anyting on the computer, except to make it faster with more Ram.
If you guys say otherwise, I will then just leave everthing alone -
it wont affect anything except games, other than that you will have 100mb more ram for apps
