A friend of mine asked me to check his V3117LA laptop. He sent the laptop to a repair PC shop, they asked him to replace the LCD which showed a white screen when the laptop is ON, although the video signal can be seen on an external monitor, although you have to wait until XP load and then press Fn+F3 to output video. After installing the new screen, the white screen was still there.

I googled the particular problem and came up there is a hardware problem that should be repaired, apparently HP offers it to repair it for free:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=my&dlc=en&docname=c01296338

    the document on spanish
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=es&cc=us&docname=c01318754

I already contacted HP to ask them what should I do, they asked me to first upgrade the BIOS, didn't work. Now they asked me to load the default BIOS settings, but I cannot do this because I can't see what's on the LCD on the external monitor since Fn+F3 doesnt work in BIOS.

So, yesterday I asked them where I could send the laptop in to make the appropiate changes of hardware (mainboard I guess).

Anyone knows why is this problem and if it's user fixable.

    Thanks

I tried hooking up the original LCD and made sure the cable is firmly connected, although the same white screen appears.
Now HP has told me that the laptop does not apply to free warranty since it can output video to an external monitor, ***.

Supposedly the laptop only applies to free warranty if video is no output to neither the LCD & external monitor or if the laptop doesn't detect wireless networks. I found out it detects them, but the touchpad does not work.
Should be a way to make the WLAN adapter not WORK in order to get a free repair.

well i don't think that will go well but why not?
the problem is that the Recall is due to a motherboard issue (which i have) and not with the WLAN adapter itself. but if its free why not?
just make sure you mention that HP page you saw about the free repair or they will make you pay! i remember when i was talking to a rep and he said it would cost $298! can you believe that? i mean i know they would know about the free repair because im sure im not the first one, but yet they probably have done this to unsuspecting customers who have no idea or have not done any research on the problem to milk them for more money.

I understand, but seems the laptop doesnt present the symptoms that allow the laptop to be replaced without charge. The Hp document states that in order to get a free repair the laptop should not be able to 'see' any wireless network (which this one does) OR there's no video on both internal LCD/external monitor (this one outputs fine to external monitor), although I'm sure it's also related to the motherboard.

Could I do a trick or something to ship the laptop. the representative already asked me my shipping details but I'm guessing there's a translation misuse:

    on english articule it says:
There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor.
THIS MEANS EXTENDED WARRANTY IS ELIGIBLE IF THERE IS NO VIDEO SIGNAL ON THE LCD PANEL OR THE EXTERNAL MONITOR, SO IN THIS CASE MY LAPTOP SHOULD BE ELLIGIBLE FOR FREE REPAIR, SINCE THE ARTICLE MENTIONS THE WORD OR, NOT AND OR NOR.

ON the same document from hp but in spanish there a mistranslation:
in the english article it says:
There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor.
    in spanish:
No hay imagen de video en el panel LCD del equipo ni en un monitor externo.

Notice in english the keyword is or, in spanish the keyword is ni

ni means both, whilst or means o in spanish which is not present in the statement above.

I'm investigating further with HP because this translation issue is what is preventing me from getting the laptop the free repair.

TwiztOG43, did your laptop failed outputting video both on LCD and external monitor or only on the internal LCD of your laptop?

random scrambled video (different colors all over screen)

    Week 3
sometimes the laptop would not show video at all, but sometimes it does

    Mid-Week 3

So do you recommend using the laptop hardcore to induce a failure on the video. HAve any suggestions on how to induce it to fail.

    What is a pos?

Nah the laptop is not mine, it's from a friend who paid for a new LCD assembly told by some stupid repair store that the LCD was faulty, after replacing the LCD it was found there was some weird problem with the motherboard that would not show the video on the LCD display.

Me on my part have been using Thinkpads since 2001 and will not use any other brand. I love quality.
