The fan on my presario V3142AU seems to run constantly now, despite cpu basically idle (<5% ;) and temps of only around 29 degrees C.

It didn't do this when new, any idea how to turn it off when not needed?

Have you changed any of the power settings? Is your processor running with Powernow(800MHz when idle & increase as & when necessary)? I would check these 2 settings. Other than these check your GPU temp as well. It could be a cause for the fan to run constantly if the temps are above 80C - 90C. If everything seems normal then it might be an hardware issue. There isnt much one can do about the fans since there isnt any way to control it.
    I use Core Temp...
