the problem with my notebook is that all of a sudden it wont start up normally anymore, i mean there are times on occasion that it would boot but majority of the time it doesn't.

what i mean exactly is that when i press the power button all i get is a black screen. no bios or Compaq logo showing up

i am sure that the hard drive and ram is ruled out because i have tested them already.

also i tried powering up the notebook on AC power only, but the weird thing is that even though the battery is out when i plug in the AC power into the notebook it powers on [not boot] even if i haven't even pressed the power button yet.

also sending it in to HP Repair is out of the question because i am out of warranty and i have made some exterior modifications [painted lid], if you have checked the cosmetic forums you'd know.

    history:
this started happening just a week ago, but i think something may have just gotten loose, because i went on a long drive [about 2,000mi] and after that it just wont boot normally. before that everything was a-o-k

    unrelated problems:
anyone know or have similar problems when hooking up your notebook to a television via S-Video cable and the picture shows up in black and white and not COLOR. i have downloaded the drivers but still no avail

this notebook is driving me ccrazy           :( :( :( :(

yes i have updated the bios, but about HP fixing it, that is out of the question because i already took it apart. i have painted the palm rests, touchpad, the quick launch button/pwr button cover, display bezel and lid, not to mention also removed the hp logo and filled it with bondo.

im assuming its a problem with the mainboard so i figure i can just order the parts myself from this site...

Or from eBay, yes. Not necessarily cost effective but I imagine you don't want to give up your custom case. Were it not for that I'd advise selling the notebook on eBay as broken (that usually works surprisingly well) and putting the money towards a dv5z with its AMD/ATI chipset... well, OK, maybe a motherboard replacement is cost effective...

good idea, but after using this notebook, id probably have to go with something smaller, sturdier and of course lighter
probably get one of the many Netbooks out there or the hp2133 Mini-Note for the aluminum case instead of one that is made of plastic.

Does the laptop power up normally when using the Quickplay key, or do you have the same problem?

the thing is, i never had QuickPlay installed to begin with.
also when i do [try] to power it up it just shows a black screen but i can hear the HDD, Optical Drive spinning and all the LEDs light up, but all the keys are un-responsive.

but on the lucky occasions that i do get it to boot [using the tilt method ] i try not to power it off, so i leave it on because i know that its going to be a pain in the arse trying to figure out how to turn it back on again :(
