GUIDE TO REFORMATING THE COMPAQ V5000
This guide is based on the DV2000T guide located at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=59471. Some parts are copied directly from that excellent post.
BURN THE RECOVERY DISC'S THAT HP RECOMMENDS. IT IS VERY USEFUL IN THE EVENT OF ANY CLEAN REINSTALLATION FAILURE AND WILL HELP IN GETTING YOU BACK TO THE FACTORY STATE.
The following are the steps I used to reformat my Compaq V5207NR, which is a Celeron-equipped preconfigured version of the V5000 which has the Broadcom 802.11 B/G wi-fi, and no built-in card reader or Bluetooth. I believe that this guide will apply to any of the V5000 variants with Intel processors, with the additions noted below if you have a different configuration. Im not sure how it will vary for AMD processor versions.
What you need:
- A Windows XP installation disc
- BACKUP of your C:\SwSetup folder
- nLite
Here are the steps I followed to remove all the bloatware installed by Compaq, and significantly improve performance:
1. I burned the whole C:\SwSetup onto a DVD and backed it up to a USB hard drive - just in case anything happened to the DVD. This contains the drivers you will need, as well as the installers for any of the preinstalled software that you want to keep.
2. I used nLite to slipstream SATA drivers onto my WinXP installation disc. The only options you HAVE to check are: Integrate Drivers and Create Bootable ISO. However, you might as well set some of the other settings while you are at it. Be careful about deleting any of the standard Windows drivers, however. When it prompts you which driver to choose, browse to the SwSetup/HDD folder. (If you chose Single driver you will need to click on iastor.inf.) Select Textmode drivers and choose Mobile ICH7M.
3. I also slipstreamed the drivers from the following folders, after downloading the newest versions from the HP/Compaq website, but you could also just install them later:
Chipset
Chipset\XP
Chipset\XP\SP
Misc1
Network
Network\apps\IntelAMT\Drivers\XP_32E
Network\PRO100\WS03XP2K
Touchpad
Video
WLAN
WLAN2
If you have the integrated card readers, Bluetooth, and/or Intel 3945 A/B/G Wi-fi, you will want to install the additional drivers listed in step 8, below. Im not sure if all the subfolders for Network and Chipset were necessary, but it worked for me. You can also wait and install these later. Only the HDD driver absolutely has to be added at this time.
Note: I also tried to slipstream the audio and modem drivers, but this did not work and I had to repeat the entire process. If anyone else has luck doing this, please post your method here. I think the setup file from 1UAA has to be run first, but it may have just been a glitch, which seems to happen every now and then with nLite.
Then create an ISO file and burn it with nLite, or just choose the direct burn option and skip creating the image.
4. I put the new WinXP disc in the drive and rebooted the unit. I first installed XP Pro-SP2, then later removed it and installed Media Center Edition using the exact same process. However, installing MCE required burning the files to DVD instead of CD, or deleting enough components to get the total size small enough to fit on a single CD. When I tried splitting it onto 2 CDs, like my original discs were, I was unable to load several of the drivers. You can use any partitioning scheme you like. The install proceeded normally.
6. After rebooting, the first thing I did was to run Setup from SwSetup\1UAA\Disk1. This loads the basic audio driver. Next run the Setup file in the Audio and Modem folders.
7. The only other Setup I really needed to run was from the SwSetupQLP folder. This loads the QuickPlay drivers. Without this, I showed a missing driver in the device manager, and the volume buttons did not work correctly. I installed only the driver, not the application (you have an option during the installation process). Since Compaq, unlike HP, has no dedicated media buttons, there is no reason to install the application that I could see.
8. If you did not slipstream the drivers listed in step 3, run the Setup files in the listed folders now. For the network driver, just right click on e100b325.inf and select Install. If you have additional options beyond what I had, and you did not already slipstream the drivers, install them now from the following locations:
Integrated card readers Misc3
Bluetooth BTOOTH
3945 A/B/G wi-fi - WLAN2\W3945-2915-2200
9. And here you go, the notebook should be working properly. To check that no drivers are missing, go to Device Manager and verify that there are no question marks. You can now install any of the included software you like. I installed the apps in the HSC, HPUG19, and HPUGSR folders so that the Help and Support Center would work. I also installed the SunJava and SonicDMP packages.
