Compaq V5000 series.....do they actually include a 'Consumer IR' port as specified?

I recently bought a Compaq V5102NR laptop. The specifications are
    listed here :

    http://tinyurl.com/h88zs

This is a SPECIFC specification sheet for the V5102NR i.e. it doesn't
include 'optional' devices or enhancements. It specifically mentions
'1 Consumer IR' port . I've been unable to find any evidence that such
a port exists on this model. There's no mention of it under the '
Device Manager' in Win XP and there are no devices in there that are
    unaccounted for.

I had a long 'online' chat with a HP/Compaq support representative but
after an hour of effort, she couldn't even tell me definitively
whether or not the device is actually present or whether the
    specification sheet has a misprint.

Does anyone know if the Compaq V5000 series (and/or specifically the
V5102NR) has an IR port? If it has then how can I get it to work.
Should it appear in the 'Device Manager'. Is there a driver I can
download (no mention of an IR device driver on the Compaq driver
    web-page for this model)?

    Thanks

    Michael

Basically any IR port found on an HP/Compaq notebook is only for use with the remote you get from HP.

They don't work with any other devices that I know of.

    Hope this helps.

Consumer IR is on my list for TOP 10 most stupid devices. I wonder how much HP has saved by not putting a real IR device in those notebooks (10c per notebook?).

Ok...but how do I know if my laptop has actually got a 'Consumer IR' device? It's in the specification but I didn't get a remote included. I can see no driver installed for it and there are no interrupts or other resources allocated to it. Surely it HAS to communicate with Windows in some way?

Does ANYONE have a Compaq/HP laptop with a inbuilt 'Consumer IR' port? If so can you please let me know if the IR device appears in the 'Device Manager'?

I don't want to go off and buy a remote from HP if it's not going to work!

I have a dv8000t, and in my device manager it shows up under Human Interface Devices as "Microsoft eHome Infrared Transciever" Also, it shows up under Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Thanks for the reply. I notice you have an Expresscard TV Tuner. Are you sure the entry in Device Manager isn't for that?.....sorry......just checking!

Not sure that's true. I've been hot-syncing my PalmPilot for years on my Compaq 2500 IR port. I haven't tried it yet on my HP 9000t, but don't see any reason why it wouldn't.

Update: Just downloaded the palm desktop and hmmm, looks like the IR doesn't work on my dv9000. So, it works on my 4 year old laptop but not on my new "multimedia do everything" laptop - how nice.

Because you had a real IR on the old laptop and a consumer IR on the new one :(

Yep, I see that now.

Well back to the stone ages - will have to use a cable again.... hmmm, if I can just find it. And of course my old palmpilot doesn't have bluetooth.
