Hey guys recently my sister Compaq V5000z have not been working properly. It freezes and after turning it off by pressing the power button for 10 sec. It turns on and it power up but no display. The fan will run, all lights turn on and DVD-Rom will open and thats pretty much it. After a while of turning it off and on it will work for a short period of time until it freeze up again. I have been trouble shooting it by removing the Battery and pressing the power button to reset the board but no luck. It looks to me that it could be a video card problem but I am not sure. Since it have Windows Vista installed.

Have any one experience these problem? What do you guys think could be causing the problem. any suggestions?

    Thanks

This happened to me on my T20 ThinkPad when the screen started going bad. Sometimes I had to power the notebook on/off at least 10 times to get the screen working.

So it is the Screen going bad? So in your case did the screen actually die? or what happened?

Is it still under warranty? Time to call HP/Compaq to find out.

Unfortunately for my sister the warranty expired back in May. I talked to an hp tech representative via chat and he told me that I need to send it in so they can inspect it and tell me what is the problem.

I chucked it into the trash, seeing as how a replacement screen and/or system board would cost 3x what the unit was worth............

Once they tell you what it is, if it is the screen they are going to charge you a pretty penny to fix it.

Do you have a single SODIMM of memory or two SODIMMs? Sometimes a bad stick of RAM can cause the kind of problem you're having. If you have two SODIMMs, try booting off of each one individually. If you find that the computer boots off of one but not the other, check with your manufacturer (if you are still under warranty) to get that stick replaced. Otherwise, just buy a new SODIMM.

It have 2 512MB sticks , I one point I took out both the memory and HDD to see it will do, but no luck. The problem it powers up, the fan turns on for a few seconds and thats it all the lights are one, CD/DVD Rom will open and no display. But I Knew that the Hard drive will not cause some thing like this. Today I talked to one of my friends and he told me that it could be the CPU since he told me it happened to him one time.

If the fan turns on for a few seconds then dies, check with HP/Compaq's support (use the live chat...they generally have a fast response) to see if you can get instructions for clearing the notebook's CMOS. There's a roughly 60/40 chance that will get you booting again.
