Hi guys, my dad's new compaq v6305nr laptop (purchased in besbuy, US, about 15 days ago) is having a problem and I dont know what problem could be. The problem is the next, the AC adapter is getting extremely hot when it charges the battery, I talk several times with two HP tech reps and they said that the problem or could be a AC adapter defective or either a motherboard problem, but the funny part is that the adapter only gets hot when the laptop is power on and it is charging the battery, but when I close the lid or turn off the laptop it gets warm but not as hot as when the laptop is on, so, I dont know if the problem is in the AC adapter or in the motherboard of the laptop. However, the laptop runs fine, and never had problems, never gets warm or hot, the vents are running ok and never had a shutdown due to the heat, the only problem is the AC adapter that gets hot when the laptop is power on, and the lid is open, but when the laptop is power off or the lid is close down it seems to work ok (the AC adapter).

So what do you think guys, is a AC adapter problem or a Motherboard problem, my major concern here is the warranty, it only covers laptops in US soil. HP send to my relatives home in the US an AC adapter brand new at no cost (or at least that was the tech rep said).

Advice: if anybody is planning to buy a laptop in the US and is planning to bring this device permanently to anothe country (like I do) buy a laptop with international warranty (in this case is no HP fault, was my fault). but again, the laptop works ok, and does not get hot.

Thanks for your imputs and advices. Regards, David.

How hot is hot? Does the AC adaptor get too hot to hold in your hand?

Battery recharge while the computer is running represents the worst load condition so the adaptor is probably running at itsfull output. Is the adaptor a bit less hot when you are using the computer but not charging the battery?

If you can hold the hot adaptor in your hand it is probably OK. They do generate a bit of heat and that heat is disposed of by radiation (one reason why the adaptors tend to be black is that black radiates heat best). Just try to avoid accidently covering the adaptor when it is in use.

If the adaptor is too hot to hold in your hand then there is a problem. I can't say whether that is with the adaptor or the computer, but it may be easiest to first try another adaptor.

    John

HP DOES have a 1 year global warranty on all their laptops, go to the HP website and do a live chat with a sales rep., you'll be asked to enter your email to get a copy of your chat log sent to it...do it...then tell the sales rep your exact model..where you bought it from and ask if it has a global warranty....you then get the chat log sent to your email and if the answer is yes you have "incriminating evidence" against HP if they wont fix it where ever you are...that way you have a "warranty for your warranty"!!

here's a line out of my chat log that might help:
Agent (Joan): "There is a 1 year Standard Global Warranty for every product of HP."

Hi John and thanks for your imput! :)

The adapter gets hot when is plugged to the laptop and the laptop is power on, and its gets really really hot, that i cant hold on with my hands too much time because can burn. But when the laptop's lid is closed or is turned off its dont get hot at all, so, Im start thinking that this maybe is a hardward issue in the laptop, the other day I connect an AC adapter from my sisters laptop (a dv6000z) and happend the same. I talk with a friend of mine and she told me that the AC adapter in his laptop does not get hot and she have the very same model as I. The adapter also remains extremely hot when the battery reach the full charge, when the laptop is power on and running.

Hi scubadoc, and thanks for your reply, wow thats very good, maybe I need to trick them in some regarding to this issue, and hope that the tech rep said that the product had international warranty, I have talk several times with HP tech reps and they said that this product had only standard warranty in the USA, so, maybe I need to find the way to get them saying that the product had international warranty as you apoint. I will take a shot and see what happend.

The adaptor will always get hot. Anyone's adaptor gets hot, it's completely normal, plus as said before you have warranty. The adaptor has been discussed many times; I haven't heard of an issue related to it so far.

Believe me, it gets really hot, i cant hold it with my bare hands for more than 3 or 4 seconds, or it will burn me. I will check the warranty around here and see what happend.
