Has anyone used the x6000 on gaming yet?

Does anyone know when this will hit the stores such as BestBuy?

I'm planning on ordering a x6000 with the following specs:

    Intel P4 3.20 GHz w/HT
    17" WXGA + Brightview
    512MB ddr ram
    80 GB
    128MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600

How long do you think this will take me as of gaming in the following months or even years down the line.

    Hey everyone!

    I own a I9200 from dell until monday [B)]

Because of known issues I am returning it. I was looking at buying a X6000, I can't find much on reviews. Due to past experience I am real concerned about the display. Can any of you X6000 owners let me know what display you have and what you think about it?

I would really appreciate the input.

    Im looking to get

    Compaq X6000
    XP Pro
    Intel Pentium 4 520
    17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)
    2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM, 400MHz (2x1024MB)
60 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    FREE Upgrade to 8X DVD +/- RW/R & CD-RW Combo!!
    256MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) X600
    FREE Upgrade to 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM!!

Check the reviews on the ZD8000, same Motherboard, same chipset Intel 915P, I would however buy two kingston KVR533D2S4/1G sticks of ram instead of the overpriced PC 3200 that HP sells with the PC. The Kingston sticks are 533MHz instead of 400MHz, I took that option. I got my ram at newegg.com it was $442.00 for two gigs. I currently have the X6000 with the brightview screen. I can't say enough about it. Very nice!

One thing I have noticed, that the prices and options of the x6000 change almost daily. So if the configuration your looking for isn't available today, it might be avaible in a week. Right now you can't get a gig of ram (maybe hp ran out of 512 sticks) but I think that option will be avaible again. For right around 2g's you can configure a NICE powerhouse!

Has anyone put the X6000 to work?

I am curious how the display holds out (sparkle, discoloration so forth)

How long the battery life is while gaming and how quiet it is. X6000 is supposed to be like the zd8000 from HP. According to PC Magazine the xd8000 is really noisy.

Also has anyone seen any cupon codes for the x6000?

I'm asking alot because no one has reviews of this yet. Plus the best way to get an overall of the notebook is by the people who use them everyday. Thanks in advance.

I've also had better luck with HP laptops than Compaq ones. I think the X6000 is quieter than the ZD8000.

The X6000 and the ZD8000 have the same noise level, same number and type of fans. The X6000 runs hot like the zd8000 as well. The reason I went with the Compaq instead of the HP was price. The same config in an HP was 300.00 more. The machines are identical. Same Motherboard, Ram, Hard drive options, optical drives, fans, cpu options. The color, speakers and the name are the difference.

Well, the Compaq laptops I had problems with were from 1999-2000. The Compaq models now I think have gotten better in quality but I haven't tried them out.

I am very interested in both the zd8000 as well as the X6000. Since they both look like the same exact systems I will probably end up getting the x6000.

There are several features I like about the zd8000 though:
    Color,
Reviews on the great speaker quality and volume,
    built in FM radio

I don't think those equate to a several hundred dollar difference, though speaker quality is definately VERY important to me in my decision.

My questions to those of you who own the x6000 are:
Is the processor in it a newer or older P4 HT socket? Extreme Edition?
    Does it game good?
Is the lcd monitor one of good quality and have a wide viewing angle?

Im also concerned on whether or not to go with an AMD 64 laptop or something along these lines--a p4. My major concern is being left behind in the dust when 64-bit technology hits maintstream.

    Is this laptop for me?

The merger of HP and Compaq was completed on May 6, 2002. Two different companies before 2002. Today, they use the same parts in both of their line-ups.

The speakers are JBL Pro (very good for a laptop speaker)but laptop speakers in general are no match for any $20 pair of stand alone speakers. The chipset on the x6000 is 915P Express chipset which has LGA775 socket for pentium 4 processors. I know that the 915P Express chipset will support the P4EE. I think the zd8000 has an option for the EE cpu. So that means the x6000 will support it as well, but no option to order it like that. FM radio, I am more an internet radio , itunes type of guy so no biggie. I do have a an external Hauppauge PVR USB2 with an FM tuner built into it, I don't use the FM though. I like the AMD64 cpu's as well. The only problem is, I can't seem to find a laptop with the rest of the specs I like that has that cpu without paying a dear price. If I wait for technology, then I would have waited forever, because every week something new comes out. The sceens are identical between the zd8000 and the x6000. I can play all the latest games without a hitch. For right now, today....this is a very good laptop. 2 years from now......who knows. Then again two years ago, a P4 2.53GHz with a 533MHz bus and a TI4600 were state of the art...today they have problems playing Doom 3....you decide!

Another question I forgot to ask concerns ram.

I notice on HPshopping.com right now they are only offering 400mhz ram in options of 256, 512, and 2gb on this model and it's like a $300 jump from 512 to 2gb.

I also noticed in one of the above posts someone had a x6000 with 533mhz pc4200 ram.

Did you buy that from somewhere else and stick it in your laptop?
Is that a cheaper and more effective solution?
Would I get better performance with pc4200 as opposed to 3200?

Oh, and I guess I will ask another question:

How does the PCI-e x600 stack up compared to AGP cards like the radeon 9700-800?

it's not overkill...Faster ram is always better especially with DDR2 which has such a high latency of 4. Most hard core gamers stay away from DDR2 because of this...it makes the ram slower, so to overcome this, faster ram is good. Regular DDR has latency of 2 to 3.

I put two gigs of Kingtson DDR2 PC2 4200 in my machine. order it with 256mb of ram......I bought the ram at new egg for 442.00 for two one gig sticks. PC2 4200 runs at 533MHz VS PC2 3200 which runs at 400MHz. Honestly, HP should be shipping these machines with PC2 4200. I just can't imagine putting together a high end machine and using 5400rpm HDD or PC 3200. When I have the option of 7200rpm HHD and I can get PC2 4200 for about the same price.....yes same price when you sell you stick of 256, PC2 3200. But that is just how I am. I realize people want and like 100 gig hard drives and they don't feel comfortable opening a new machine and replacing ram. To each their own! I just like to sqeeze the max with what I have. Still a good machine no matter how you look at it.

DDR2 is the next step in memory frequency scaling. The same concept can be applied to Intel's Prescott and Northwood CPU cores. The Northwood was indeed the better core since it allowed great performance, high overclocking potential, and ran at noticeably cooler temperatures; but it was forced to be replaced by the Prescott core. The 0.13 micron construction hit the ceiling. It was unable to go beyond the limit of 3.4GHZ. The smaller 90nm Prescott core allowed extra room for gigahertz speed but came with the mind boggling hot temperatures. There were no other options. You can only count on cooling companies to provide better cooling solutions. The same is with DDR2. The high scaling DDR2 can only count on memory manufacturers to help bring down the high latencies to attract more attention. Personally, I find DDR2 to be a great next step, but demand is low because enthusiasts are automatically turned down by the high latencies.

Two days in this forum have help solidified my decision to go with the x6000 than weeks of comparisons and searches. The info given in this forum has been great and has definately helped me make my decision to go with this laptop.

Another question I have is regarding the processor. Im trying to decide between the p4 540 (3.2ghz) & the p4 560 (3.6ghz). Which one should I choose? Will I really see the $300 difference between the two?

Indeed you are correct. Is 400MHz worth $300.00 when your at the 3 GHz mark? I will leave that decision to you. I split the difference, that's why I went with the 540. I did this because a faster Hard Drive the Hitachi 7k60 7200 rpm drive is simply the best drive you can get in a notebook! A 7200rpm drive alone gives you a 15% speed increase over a 5400rpm drive and as much as a 30% speed increase over a 4200rpm drive. More Ram, faster Hard drive, together with a good video card is MUCH cheaper than the $300.00 cpu upgrade when configured, and it will give you better everyday performance. But some people want the fastest, the best that is offered, So that would set you back about $2300-$2400 in this lappy. If they sky is the limit, why not! But I used what makes sence to me. I put my money to use with a lesser cpu, but got the better ram, and of course the 7k60. My system the way it sits came in right around 2 grand. And yes, I will sell my installed ram that will bring the system down in the $1900 range. Not bad for what I have.

I got the ram from Newegg...which is sold out. But I also deal with Page Computers. The price at Page is actually a couple of dollars cheaper...here is a linky:

    http://www.pagecomputers.com/cgi-bin/page/B1535697.html

It comes out to like $220 per gig with shipping. For zd8000 buyers...do yourself a favor...don't pay $675.00 for two gigs of PC2 3200

Could one even utilize all 2gb of memory? Isn't that overkill?

2 gigs is not overkill, you can multitask like mad! With the price of ram today...it's worth it. A lot of high end gaming rigs come with 2 gigs today, Alienware Area 51, Voodoo ect... On the other end of the coin...if they offered the x850 video card for an upgrade option...yea I would have went with 1 gig and upgraded the video card. But thats not possible so 2 gigs it is...say goodbye to windows swap files!!! Try to edit a 12 Gig video file then say 2 Gigs is overkill. It can be done...but is so much easier with more ram.

Another thing I've ponderred on for a while is the general heat issue many people have when dealing with processors like the p4.

Has anyone here experienced bad heating problems, anything I should know about this particular laptop and the heat from it? I've heard rumors of laptops being so hot they have burnt marks into tables...is this something I should worry about?

By the way, I really do appreciate all advice everyone has given me thus far.

Sense I ordered my X6000, I was wondering if there are any problems or annoyances with this notebook. I want to be ready for what comes my way. Also I was wondering if I should get a cooler fan for the notebook seeing how it runs hot. Has anyone's notebook died because of heating issues.

Thanks in advance for the info.[ :)]

The only problem I see is my right hand gets hot on the keyboard...nothing to drastic though. My cpu runs on average with heavy gaming at about 55 degrees C. Not near the burn mark range.

A notebook cooler is never a bad idea IMHO, the cooler the machine runs the better. I don't have one...I guess because I lay on the sofa and surf the web wireless...but I might get one for gaming. What proc did you decide on? No worries with the memory either...my system is running great! last night I ran Mad Onions Sysmark2001se..again...the system scored 11600..not to shabby for a notebook.

I'm interested in knowing whether or not I should get a external cooling system or not as well. I plan on going with the p4 530 I think. Will that get hot enough while gaming that I should really look in to external cooling options or not?

My perhaps biggest question though is to those of you that own this notebook: Do you honestly recommend it? If given the chance to turn back time, would you buy it again? Do you in any way regret your purchase? and above all; have you noticed any flaws with this notebook?
