Hi,
My name is jackson, Studying in a Business school in Kerala India... Now 2nd year... Laptops were compulsory for all who are joining the college for PG... Most of us(95 out of 210 students) had bought the Compaq or HP laptop from in and around Cochin, reason being more public opinion and comparatively lesser cost.
But it's hard to say that most of the HP or Compaq laptop were now facing worst problems than any other laptop, so that many have to buy the entire new one now... Chipset problems, monitor problems, Lan not working, Dvd writer problems and going on...
About 77% of Hp/compaq laptops are having the battery backup problem. Whatever the cost by which it was bought. For me it was 2 minutes, for my close friends it varies from .5 to 10 minutes...
Many laptops were having the chip set problem so that HP people since it's after 1year, no service... Due to the high cost of components many have to discard the laptops entirely...
We can take the one more year service warranty by giving higher cost when compared to acer ..but battery and many parts which are not under the service scheme.. Whose who took the same also sucks really badly...
During the time when i was taking the laptop ACER although being very complaint's brand now has changed drastically... ACER laptops which is lesser in cost is good showing lesser complaints compared to the Compaq/Hp laptops now...
Dell and Lenova systems have very little Complaint from my experience...
Now from my experience after 15 months of laptop usage, will recommends that never ever go for laptops unless necessary and mandatory... Go for the desktops... at least we will be able to replace the faulty desktop components after the service period than to discard the same completely...

now here is my recommendation never ever ever ever buy a electronic component kids!!! it will break down eventually!! dont take that big risk.. go live in woods and sleep in the grass
edit: btw.. do u even have something to back those percentages? Hey! im not saying hp or compaq are great.. im not even defending them.. i owned a compaq, it sucked at playing cuz kept shutting down due to heat... i know hp has heat issues as well.. but man... EVERY company has problems... have u seen the new gateway 7811? ive seen more replacements on that computer that my mail in my entire life... and thats not even close to keep me from buying one or even not buying a notebook at all -
You can't comment on a brand based on a few certain models. Not all HP or compaq over heats or are badly designed. As mentioned, every company has a bad model or two in their line. So will improve these notebooks in the following generation, some are over looked. You will see complains about almost every brand here on NBR, that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy any notebook.
Yes some people have bad experience but even more have good experience, its a shame that you only ever heard about the bad side on internet forums such as NBR. Also, doing research before a purchase goes a long way.

I don't think you could have made any more of a biased statement. Seriously, if you said your name was Obama I would believe it.
A majority of the people who experience problems with any type of laptop past the warranty expiration which is usually one year, do not realize the purpose of the extended warranty. If you would have spent the few bucks more you wouldn't have to buy a new laptop each year. Think of it as home owner's insurance. What happens when you aren't covered and your house burns down? Are you going to blame the real estate agent who sold you the house?
All I can say is, you get what you pay for in life. Next time, don't be a statistic and get the extended warranty. I did and I can say I am the most happiest HP computer owner. -
My HP has been great so far. I had one hiccup and it took only a few days to get it resolved. Other then that Im still happy with buying from HP. The only issue I have with HP is that they dont make it possible to do a clean install of vista.

If you buy a HP/Compaq product in India, does that mean the phone support personnel are in the US?
Just wondering...... -
I purchased a Compaq laptop model V 3225 AU bearing sr. no 2CE720306R on 20 July 2007. In May 2008, the laptop started giving complaints and it was taken to their authorised service center in Cochin( Call ticket no:1463). Unable to diagonise the problem as it did not repeat while in their service center, they returned the same with in two days. Within a day the complaint re occured and I took it back again to their service center ( Call ticket no:1510). First they said it is corrupted OS, but soon they realised it is not, but were not able to diagonise the actual fault. Finally they said they will try replacing its System board and LCD. But on receiving it back I found the performance of the machine had gone down alot including its battery backup and I gave a complaint to them asking for replacement of the whole products since it seemed to be having some manufacturing defect. One of my friend who purchased the same model just one week ahead of me had also similar problems and same kind of rectification was done in his case too. My request for replacement of the laptop was ignored by HP despite the poor performance. On November 8, 2008, the same complaint reoccured and it was again taken to their service center. I was given a call ticket no:100389 and the lady at the service center informed me that this particular model has an inherent defect and hence the company is giving free replacement of the systems board even after its guarantee period is over. They replaced the system board after a week and with in 10 days it started giving the same trouble. When I took it back to the service center, they said all that we can do is try replacing the system board again, since this is problem with this particular model and we can only hope for the best! They gave me a call ticket no: 10054 which was later transfered to their another service center with a fresh call ticket no: 5649. After two weeks they informed me that machine is ready for delivery, but they said in the process the OS is corrupted. They did not even bother to reload the OS though it has a orginal OS supplied by them. The battery back up of the machine after each replacement has been going down and at the moment it just last a few minutes though it is just over a year old! The HP is not willing to to give me a new battery saying it is out of warranty now. I would not again buy another HP product again and wont recommend it to any one for sure!
