Wife's Compaq Presario C 500 laptop sat idle for several weeks. I tried to start it and discovered the battery was down. I charged it and now it will not go past the Compaq opening page. I inserted the Recovery CD in the drive and tried to restart. Same results. I tried slowly pressing the f5, f8, f10, f11 keys (one at a time) while booting and still will not go past the Compaq screen. In the lower left, the instructions to choose boot order and setup keys also will not work.

    Any clues??

I reposted this problem on the Presario section. I found the solution by searching Google.

    Here's what I found:
    Remove battery.
Hold down START button for 20 seconds.
    Replaced battery.
It started but did weird things. Held down START button until it shut down.
Restarted and pulsed f8 key. It started.
A "REPAIR YOUR COMPUTER" choice came up.
After following a few prompts, everything works now. Case closed!!

    HOW WAS I TO KNOW???
