    Compaq n610c makes squealing noises, popping when shut down, and cannot run from batter

    my friend's Compaq n610c (I kno, ancient) has the following problem:

    when it's running off AC, after a few hours, it starts squealing a high pitched noise. When shut down after that, it emits a few pops.

    if he tries to run off battery, it'll stay on for a few minutes, Windows still thinks its on Ac power, and then the computer dies

    I suspect the DC-DC converter board, but is there anything else?

    I think he should just get a new laptop.
