I just purchased this compaq notebook and really like it except.....that when using the battery power the screen gets very dim.... even with the brightness maxed out. Does anyone know a work around for the energy management system. I spoke with compaq and after playing around with the settings there was no change. The tech said that they could not help. I would appriciate any advice.

    Thanks,

    Chris

at least on all the other ones I've dealt with it automatically dims the monitor, but you should be able to turn it back up with fn + f4 or something like that.

we have 3 comcrap notebooks and they all dim when on battery, have never figured out a workaround.

on your 2199, did you get WLAN preinstalled?

    Chris,

When you say the screen gets very dim even with the brightness maxed out, is the brightness maxed out while connected to AC? On the NX7000 I had, there are 2 brightness levels that the notebook remembers, one with AC connect & one with only battery connected. I just increased the brightness when in battery mode by hitting Fn+F8 until the screen when to max brightness and that was it. It should keep this setting from now on when on battery mode.

    Good luck!

    Chris.

On your 2199US, do you hear a constant, but somewhat mutted clicking sound near the fan?

I do and a technician said that is the read/write head of the hard drive moving back and forth. Do you have a similar experience?

Mine seems trouble free for now.

I'm not too keen on the springy keyboard though :(

If you want a very noticeable performance increase - format it and reload with your own vanilla OS.

I use XP Pro and the only drivers you need to load from the supplied driver disk is the Modem and the LAN I think? It only needs two for sure.

One thing that was very apparent after the format/re-install other than the increased "snap" to the system was that the volume of the speakers had doubled. No idea why this would be but the first time I watched a Divx movie I ended up wearing headphones as it was just too low to hear clearly. Now I need to turn it down - this is using the XP default drivers.

I ended up installing the keyboard drivers as I wanted the onscreen display controls. This produced another difference - the original load gave a nice compact on-screen display, whereas the XP Pro vanilla load show very large bars and looks a lot less sophisticated.

Overall other than the keyboard I'm very happy with this machine after the format and reload :)

Tell it like it is...NOT how it should be :)
