Ok I am after a budget 15.4" core 2 duo laptop for around £300.

    I saw these 2 compaq laptops :

The Compaq presario C700 series and the Compaq presario V6500(V6000) series.

Same spec (same hdd, processor etc) just different cosmetics and extras.

The C700 series is newer but a budget model, and doesnt have some things the v6500 series has. But the v6500 series is discontinued now and older.

What does everyone think is better? Anyone had any experience with these laptops? Or know any problems with these models ?

How does battery life , noise, looks etc compare between them ?

    Thanks again :)

I prefer the look of the C700 series, a bit more consistent in design between the different surfaces. And the lid is really nice.

Of course, the best philosophy in notebooks is that a balance between form and function is best. Does the C700 have the specification that you require?

    Good luck!

Yeh both have the spec i need, and both are the same spec. Its just the difference in look, battery life, weight, fan noise etc.

The V6500 series has a card reader and pc express slot and touch buttons etc,
While the c700 series has webcam but none of the above,

so dont know whats better, as the v6500 is older too

i had bought a compaq presario F500 series at walmart last year. the mobo went out on me 5 months after i had it. the build was surprisingly good for a budget laptop, and i thought the speakers sounded good too.
i just don't know how long these "budget" compaq's actually last a person.
but i've heard people have really good luck with them and some don't.

The C700 series stayed around longer as a CTO, but they are now both discontinued and replaced by the CQ50.

Generally the C700 was lacking the V6500's available Imprint Finish and a few minor features as mentioned above, otherwise they are similar.

A CTO is a customizable one. The C700 was more budget-oriented, hence the lack of features & finish. On the flipside, I've yet to hear about heating issues on the C700........

Unless I'm mistaken, the V6000 series was part of the "Enhanced" warranty program reguarding the heat issues that plagued the sister Pavilion models.

What are the exact model numbers of the two units, so we can compare the internals directly?

Its the Compaq C740EM and the Compaq V6560EA

It's hard to find information bout these models now, as there seem to have all been discontinued and new models are out.

But see what you find :) ?

I just looked them up. As I suspected, the V6560EA has a BIOS version that changes the fan algorithms to agressive to prevent premature failure (just like on my dv6400). I'd stay away from this one, as mine is already exhibiting signs of failure...

The BIOS revisions for the C740EM make no reference toward this, so it is a safer bet....

    Hi,

What I'm reading is That the C740EM offers a small increase in power over the V6560EA, but the V-series offers good looks in trade for a small amount of speed.

The V6560EA does offer some nice touches like the HP Imprint finish, touch buttons and more expansion ports; however the C-Series offers you video chat ability.

I would buy the V6560EA because performance-wise there won't be much difference and you won't have a grey box of a computer; the Imprint finish at least adds a bit of character and individualism to the notebook.

    --Tom

EDIT: Looks like recent findings show that the C-series is more reliable, which counts more than any other factor at this kind of money.
