Ok, so I have a bit of a headache, my Compaq Presario Laptop has a Geforce4 440 Go video card(NV17M), and apparantly only supports Direct X 7.0 How old is DX7? 4 years? The nv17m is 2 years old, and I have an ATI Radeon 8500LE that is 3 years old and it is running DX8 just fine, and HalfLife2 looks awesome on the ancient thing, while HL2 on my lappy is just meager, hardly better than old Half-Life. At this point I have given up, and just want to confirm that my laptop doesn't support dx8 or 9, various sources on google hint towards the NV17M supporting dx8 atleast, so my head is being twisted and contorted quite cruely. Anyways, maybe someone out there has the same vid card with some advice, atleast half life 2 plays perfect on this machine, save the direct x probelm, **** microsoft.

By the way if ur looking for a nice laptop the R3000 line is good, fast with AMD64bit, just be sure to pick the ones that have ATI cards, atleast they plan for future direct x releases. Thanks for reading.

Have you installed the lastest NVidia drivers (not the ones on HP's site)? This could just be a driver issue. I tried playing HL2 on my desktop with an ATI 9800 Pro w/128MB & DirectX 9 support and it kept locking up on me. I thought I had the lastest drivers, but was off by 1 version. After installing it, it worked perfectly. Yours may be a similar driver problem.

The drivers on nvidia.com are NOT compatible with their mobile series GPUs, at least not the GeForce 440 Go. There's a way to force them to install but it causes serious rendering problems.

The 440 Go is an antique, over 3 years old. It could have been worse, HP would likely have inflicted a shared memory video solution on us if it had been available at the time. It's comparable to the 440MX desktop chip. It can do up to DirectX 7 in hardware and that's it.

Yes, these are great machines for getting work done, and surprisingly easy to upgrade (except the video, which is soldered to the motherboard), but they just aren't for state-of-the-art gaming despite the state-of-the-art CPU.

BTW, Sasem's USB HDTV works with these notebooks. I received mine yesterday. So far I'm very impressed with it.
