my friend give me this compaw persario 12XL300 notebook to use to surf the net, it's an old notebook with a celeron processor with 5gb of hard drives space. i got home and use it for one day but the next day when i turned it on, there was smoke coming out of where i plug the power line in for the charger. Now when i plug the charger in, it won't charge the Batteries but the note is still working fine just the batteriese won't charge. can anyone tell how much it would cost to fix this problem and where to get it fix? i dont want to spend alot of money on this notebook since im only using it to surf the net and write word doc's.

    thanks

Smoke is a bad sign, that notebook isn't worth more then 200$ from the parts you mentioned. I would think any repair at the least will be 100 probably a lot more. If it works but can't charge then your charging system/power system has a problem. That's normaly part of the motherboard. So a repair would cost a lot! Id say if you can get a free estatement go for it otherwise its not worth it.

most times the power connection is sodered right to the motherboard so it can't be replaced without replacing the board.

you should use a screwdriver or something to take out the power jack first to see if u can spot any obvious problems [you are gonna have to take it out anyways to replace].

also, its 8 bucks, it wouldnt hurt to try it... but it might be a pain to install though...
