    Hi.

Has anyone tried a new bios for v2000z, F.13?

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&os=228&product=1144546&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-37062-1

They say that the problem with acpi and a clock in linux is fixed , which is true.
But they didn`t mention that they changed something with the temperature when fan turns on.
With F.11 it turned on when temp was over 55C and now with F.13 it turns on when its over 60C.
My laptop now is more quiet but the average temperature is higher which i don`t like. Now i`m pretty sure that i have to buy a cooler pad.

Anyone got some more info about new bios upgrade?

If i notice something more i`ll post it.

Nice info. I am also thinking of upgrading. Let me know if you observe any negative affects.

Actually I did not expect HP to release a new BIOS so soon, and that too fix a Linux bug which they do not support officially. :)

Fan temps thing, I am not sure if it is bad, generally CPU temp hovers around 53-54C, so it kicks in more often in a warm room. Once fan starts it only takes about 5-10 secs to go down to 50C. So fan cycling reduces a lot. I am mostly worried about HDD temp than CPU temp. I wonder if CPU fan also suck some air from HDD compartment( it has some openings which lead to fan intake).

Anyways pls let us know anything different you notice.

    Thanks

I installed this last week. Been noticing a rise of about 5C on my CPU temp.

Sound like the seasonal change for those of us living in North Hemisphere.

I did the flashing last night. But I barely use this laptop these days to comment.

i`ve noticed same thing. I don`t know nothing about hdd temp, have to check it later. i don`t know any apps for linux that can check my hdd temp, got to look for any. Maybe i`ll do it on windows.

I wonder if that change could do something with battery life, the fan kicks in more rarely than before.

aside from the CPU temp reading 5C higher, do you actually notice/feel the laptop being warmer? is the case warmer than before the new bios?

I've read somewhere that the Turion's max temp is 95C. so 60C should be perfectly fine.

No, the laptop feels the same. The HDD temp has remained the same also. As for the seasonal change... the temp would drop not rise during the winter.

No, we do not need to worry about CPU temp, 60C is perfectly fine for mobile cpus, these are rated for max temp of 95C.

Still, I'm worried about the higher temp on the chipset. Higher temps generally shorten the life of the whole notebook. I probably won't go to f.13

Actually I just installed and did some tests.

Fan kicks in at 58C( from 55C), so only up by 3 C.
    Fan stops when temp 50C.

On windows these are only changes I could observe at this time. I will update if I see any more. I wished they support T1 timings, but they did not.

Overall fan behavior is more smoother with longer fan cycles.

BTW, Vassil, the temp of 58C hardly any different than 55C on mobile chips, so you do not need to worry about. Smoother fan cycles are worh it. It is really helpful when you are browsing on battery.

If so, that is a change you do not have to make, it happens naturally. What I mean is the change is to make it as a heater for your cold winter

    Hmm,

I do not know why it different, but I was watching temps in Mobile Meter while running Prime95 on AC Power to watch the cycles. Fan started at 58C was kept running running little over a minute I think, and temp dropped to 50C and fan stopped.

I got these readings after several cycles, so I am not sure if MobileMeter is not giving right temps.

What software you are using to monitor temps?

As an update here, my 5 day old V2000z CTO, Turion ML-34 arrived with BIOS F.21 with a date of 12/09/2005. But, it's not posted at HP.

    Great machine so far.
