I bought Compaq v6420US from and I am happy with it, My question is can CPU and videocard upgradable in the future? I called HP tech support and they said it was not recommand even though it will charge me 500.00 to upgrade cpu or videocard. They said that I should have order notebook from HP website for easy upgrade than from the store.
What do you think? Have you upgrade anything?

Check the platform and the highest CPU they sold that model with. Chances are you can upgrade the CPU to the same speed. However, GPU, you are screwed.

Depends on how comfortable you are with dismantling the notebook to acess the cpu. HP notebooks arent really made with ease of upgrade in mind. You would have to take out every screw, LCD, keyboard, casing and then put it back toghter. It might be easy to disassemble but putting things back sometime can cause problem. Tearing up the notebook also creates problems if you want to use the warranty in the future. HP might void your warranty claming the upgraded cpu caused an issue and you would have to go through lots of pain just to get it fixed.

HP will void your warranty, there's no question about that. Even if the problem is totally unrelated, messing with the CPU is an automatic disqualifier for any warranty service. Furthermore, upgrading the CPU usually results in a tiny gain in performance. The risk is almost never worth it.

If the laptop is out of warranty go for it. (If you are pc inclined. ) The only issue in update the cpu is the cooling solution. AS5

oh right I guess it is not worth because I purchased 5 yr warranty. I just wish HP would have to install CPU for me instead.

You can try to see if they will allow a certified local shop to make changes. If they authorize it. Then you can try to place a new cpu. Just make sure you keep the old one in case you need to send it back.
