i have a few questions on my future purchase (maybe) of a compaq z2000v.
    1. what kind of battery life can i expect with the 12cell battery and ml 1.6?
    2. what upgrade should i make since ihave a little left over in my budget? 1. $25 for a 1mb cache in my 1.6) 2. $25 for the brightview screen) ????????
    3. anything really else i should look at? BTW specs are:

    ML28
    512mb ram
    60gb 5400
    200M w/ports
    dvd burner
    12 cell batt.

    1. 5-6 hours on light use
    2. I say downgrade to 256mb memory and upgrade it yourself to 512mb or whatever you want because you're getting charged twice as much for them to add a 256mb stick. This way get both upgrades you want.
    3. DVD burner could be self upgraded too for cheaper probably =)

    2. parents prefure me not upgrading it myself for a good while, so i'll go with 512mb from hp.
    3. no, deffinately not going to try to self-upgrade dvd burner.

also, any answer to which i should upgrade to from hp?

Which one is it - the m2000z or the v2000z???

If the laptop is for general use you might as well downgrade to the Sempron 3300+(you are going to lose 64 bit but that should not make too much of a difference for budget computing) which will be close to the performance of the ML28 but has a TDP of 25W which is going to improve battery life by a bit and also will probably give you the chance to upgrade to 1GB RAM.

Overall, I'd recommend the BrightView screen, I feel that its positives far outweight its negatives.

I would also suggest the brightview screen(if you can stand some of the glare it generates in certain conditions). The performance difference between the 512K & 1mb cache is not too great and you wont notice running general apps other than if you are running benchmarking software.

I would suggest to go with ML-30, DVD-Burner( as we are not going to save much as Burner itself is around $95). But memory is quite easy, only two screws which are marked. For less than $50 you could get one 512MB stick.

And about Turion vs Sempron, if you do not need 64Bit support it would be cheaper and cooler to go with Sempron 3300+.

Please see the memory thread. It takes Corsair DDR400 stick without any problem. Many other DDR333 may also work. But this is what I have been using without any problem and it is far cheaper than HP, Crucial etc.

yes upgrading the memory yourself is easy. I've never used a notebook or upgrading the memory before but I did it with no problem at all. Just open the memory chamber below the notebook and plug it in....... very easy.

BTW if u're going to use 400mhz ram do not use it with your old 256mb 333 mhz that came with the machine or the new one will get dragged back to 333mhz as well.

I suggest 2 sticks and do something with the 256mb that came with the machine (sell, give, throw away, keep, or whatever )

Actually, I'd go for a single 1GB stick, that way you can add another one later without having to throw one away, and you can use the 256 already in there to have a total of 1.25GB of RAM. :D

but that cost quite a bit more. and i doubt i would ever need more then a gig in the machine......since its only got to last 3 year 4 at max.

    Actually, two 512's and a single 1GB are very similar in price aftermarket. I just bought a 1GB stick of high-performance OCZ for $98 - 20R = $78.

then why buy a 400mhz stick?

    u know... if u use a 400mhz with a 333mhz they're both gonna run at 333 mhz.
if u wanna use thm together just buy a new 333 mhz then. doh
