I want to upgrade my HDD to a HITACHI Travelstar 7K60 HDD, which is 7200 rpm.

Any advise or suggestions from the experts will be wellcomed.

I can't immediately recall where I found diagrams for doing the replacement in a zv500z or similar, but perhaps Brianstretch has the info handy and will chime in.

I don't know how your machine is configured, but in mine there is a plate in the bottom; using a #1 or #0 (small, anyway) Phillips remove the screws and set the plate aside. The hard drive is most likely mounted in a carrier, or tray; that in turn may be screwed to the laptop body. Make sketches or take digital pictures as you go. Have small containers handy for screws. Observe the relationship of the connector to the tray and hard drive. Be gentle (Brianstretch related how he broke some pins the first time he did it, but said he was a little rough). Unplug the old drive, remove it from the carrier (probably 4 screws, two per long side), plug in the new, screw the HD into the tray, reconnect [gently], refasten all the screws, and get ready to load the o/s. Lood for USB2 external cases, you can put the old disk in it as a go-anywhere [anywhere there's USB] portable drive.

It really isn't as hard as I've made it sound - just watch carefully as you disassemble to make reassembly accurate and easy.

    Thanks a lot Stefano,
    Your reply is much appreciated.
There is a deal on newegg.com for this drive, which I could not pass up(149$).

I never broke anything, that was someone else. I swapped drives back and forth several times without trouble. Just be gentle when removing the adaptor that fits over the IDE pins and you'll be fine.

I recommend having a WinXP install CD with SP2 integrated ready for when you do the full reinstall, assuming that's what you're planning. If your WinXP CD doesn't have SP2 already, slipstream SP2 and burn a new CD. Tom's Hardware Guide documented how to do that a while back (I tried it successfully), and there's a program called Autostream that's supposed to be handy.
