So I wasn't sure which section to put this thread under. My problem initially started with the whole "display driver stopped responding" issue referenced here.

The problem came about suddenly (about 2 days ago), after about 2 years of never encountering it before. I didn't want to deal with the problem, because I was busy with school, so I did a disk check, partitioned my hard drive, and installed Ububtu. I thought for sure this would fix the problem, as I had previously heard the issue was something to do with the nVidia driver and Vista incompatibility.

After installing Ubuntu, I was good to go for a good 3 hours. I thought I had bypassed the problem when suddenly my laptop crashed. I wasn't even doing anything intensive, like watching a movie or gaming. I was simply installing some software into Ubuntu via the Synaptic Package Manager. I didn't get a display driver error like I did in Windows, but the same type of thing happened...the screen flashed, turned black, did the usual crap, and then turned off.

The main problem this time is that I can't turn my laptop back on. If I hit the power, I hear my hard drive start running and the lights that usually turn on, turn on. My screen however, goes from black to an illuminated black, without even showing the BIOS boot screen. I kind of think my graphics card died. Not sure though.

Does any have any suggestions for fixing this computer? I'm trying hard not to put a whole the screen.

*I have a HP Pavilion dv9000t laptop with a nVidia GeForce Go 7600 installed. 2 GBs of RAM as well.

it sounds like the graphics card is overheating, you should phone up HP as alot of people had problems with this on the HP pavilions with Nviai Geforce 7 gfx cards.

Your GPU could have quite possibly died. Try taking the battery out and removing the AC adapter. Then hold the power button down for like 30 seconds and reapply power. It won't fix your laptop if your GPU has completely died (which it probably has), but it's worth a try. Also, does your laptop let out any beeps when you turn it on?

I can't really call HP without paying a crapload, because I'm over my warranty now.

@Jstn7477: I actually did try that. It helped at first, but now it stopped making any difference. My laptop doesn't let out any beeps if I don't touch it while it's booting. One time (when I was about to lose my sanity) I started pressing all the F buttons when it was booting, and it beeped a bit at me. So it seems like it might be booting up, but I'm just not able to see it.

It sounds like your computer may come under the "HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement". Repairs are made free to a group of notebooks which exhibit the condition your notebook is experiencing with the Nvidia chips. Check here for info:

I think this is just a different link to the same warranty/problem but I will provide it anyway as I don't want to read the whole thing :)

I would definitely contact HP and try to get it fixed under the above recall warranty. Many people on this forum have had problems the same or similar to yours and received free warranty repair under the above service enhancement even though there notebooks were out of original warranty.

    Thanks for that link.
It does seem that my computer would qualify. I'll make sure to call within the next day and find out for sure.
