I would just like to get a toll on how many people are having a recording issue with their Conexant HD Audio (venice) sound card.
To know if you have a venice version or not:-
o Run, dxdiag
o Click sound 1 and read the Device ID:
If the Device ID contains "DEV_5045" then the PC has the Venice audio chipset.
If the Device ID contains "DEV_5047" then the PC has the Waikiki audio chipset.
If you do have a venice card and have set the recording levels to 100, and still have to shout to be heard at all by card and built-in microphones then please click the poll.
So far there still isn't a fix. This has been going on since the middle of the last year under XP and now it's happening under Vista. There has been plenty of time to fix this issue! Customers are not beta testers (Unless asked), and it's about time companies realised this!
For more info try reading http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=109066
EDIT: If you are not having problems with recording using the built-in mics, and are sure you have the venice audio card, please give all details of your machine, OS, driver version etc etc. Thanks!

Both machines I tested have venice and are running vista, driver 4.15.0.50. The 9000 series (DV9220US) works perfectly and has a very decent quality audio recording. The 6000 series (DV6233US) is cr*p to say the least...
Given I paid practically half for the 6000 spec I guess HP thinks quality (or lack of) does come with the price. Shame. -
oh oh that scares me if your DV9220US is working correct because I have the same drive and my mic works bad. But if I use my external mic it is still low. This is confusing and I wish HP could make it all better with a driver or something and that I not have to send my laptop back
-
OS: Vista
Driver version: 4.15.50 (Venice)
The mic works and is recognised but all I can hear is just static noise. But if I just roll back the driver to the default ones included in Vista, it works just fine. No issues with volume levels and I use Skype regularly and havent had any problems(ofcourse with the default drivers). I still think the volume levels could be better but atleast the mic works with the stock drivers.
The mic worked just fine in XP. -
I started to write to HP, I understand that the change for solving the problem is very small but the more people that complain the faster something is done. So if your mic is not working the way it should start sending them emails. It takes little time and maybe they will actually do something about it in short term.
-
I'm interested to know with the Vista users, can you use the voice recognition that comes with vista?
Also, when testing the mic levels how many bars do you get when talking normally with the built-in mics? The most I get is the second one if I shout my head off! -
You guys gave me the idea to go back to the first audio drivers i had; and the mics are working! while with the last ones i got from update they did'nt record scratch.
Now, its a faint voice i can hear there, and have to howl to hear myself in playback, but hey, lets be positive: its a start. -
Just a correction to my previous post. It looks like like when I rolled back the drivers it went back to the previous Conexant driver 4.8.00. This seems to work the best and when I rolled back to the default Vista drivers I found the same problem with the volume being too low and couldnt basically hear anything. I would suggest people try the 4.800 drivers and see if it helps on their systems.

Hey everybody so talking to HP they also told me to install the original driver 4.8.00. And Yes I have some more volume but still not great. If I now play it back with my volume (audio) on 60 I can here myself normal. I will test it out with msn. Also for the people that have it working do you signal enhancement on? For me I hear no difference. When I talk now the bars go to the second without shouting. Voice regognigition works even when my mic volume was really low
-
Ok I have tested now with VOIP and it still sucked. I do get the message now when I open the sound control panel ( Windows has detected that audio enhancement for the following devices are causing problems: microphone (conextant high definition audio) Would you like to disable driver enhancement for this device)
I reported also back to HP and they told me to send it in for repair. So I am sending it in it annoying I paid so much money for a device that is not working correctly. -
The problem that I have with my DV2000z at this moment is that when ever I am recording or Riping a CD/DVD and playing music at the same time the audio start to stutter making it impossible to listen to music while recording or riping. Is this problem related to the problem you guys are having?

I'm not happy to be part of this club:
Notebook: HP Pavilion dv6230ea
Sound Hardware IDs: Venice 5045
OS: Vista 32 bit
Sound works well in general except the built-in microphone. I can record sound but the sound level is way too low (yes, the level option is set to 100 in the driver options, tried numerous microphone options and driver versions).
Microphone is unusable with VOIP software such as Skype and speech recognition because you have to scream to be heard.
I'm not sure whether to return this laptop to the shop and get an Asus instead or if this is can be fixed properly via an updated driver. If I plug in a headset the recording is fine. -
Pavilion dv5204ea
XP Proffesional SP2
Windows Update, has stoped my microphone work.
During boot, while there is a logo loading windows etc, mic works for a few secs. than just fades, and I don`t know what to do.
Sound works perfectly. Befor Updating, mic worked as it should, after, just stoped. All settings are OK.
Any ideas? -
my mic sucks! i have it up the volume up to 100, and it is still very faint! hp needs to fix this!

Notebook: HP Pavilion dv9207US
Sound Hardware IDs: Venice 5045
OS: Vista 32 bit, XP 32 bit
In XP I get a terrible static sound when recording using the built-in microphones. In Vista it's perfect sound quality, it's just too quiet! C'mon HP!!!
Other than that, this is a great laptop! -
Hey all, so I have my laptop back.
First of all the repai receipt did not say anything, the did not write a single thing on there. I do now have the high pitched sound when on battery which was not there before. And as far as I can tell still have to test it with msn the volume is not better. so I do not know what to do anymore. -
Ok after contact HP again I come to this conclusion. HP repair service are idiots!!!!! So after talking with the online help and installing new drivers updating everything. the say send it in we will fix. what do they do. I quote from the email "I have checked your case in our database and found that your HP Pavilionnotebook has been updated with the software and BIOS firmware." and they did not even check the mic before they send it back. the filled my laptop with al there junk (bloatware) but do not fix anything. So did anyone else send it back for repairs and got the mic fixed? Sorry for the language but I AM PISSED OF AT HP!!!

i know how you feel, their tech support is horrible. i had to send my laptop in because my mic didnt work period (i had the waikaiki chipset), but now it works (my new laptop has the venice chipest)...but its faint and i am still disappointed....and not only that...but i also got a SEC monitor and its a little to dim for my tasted compared to my other monitor.
what i am planning on doing is waiting a month or so (till the new GPU and HDDVD option comes out) and i will call the case manager and tell him that my mic issue is still not resolved and i would like to get a new laptop (yet again...*sigh*) i reccomend going the same route. -
Interesting. I have the same problem at home. But I know the guy who sold me the laptop had no problem with it. He talked to me via MSN and I could hear him loud and clear, so there is still hope. I have Vista and the latest drivers, there's plenty of static and I can barely hear myself if I record something. But when HE used it via MSN I could hear every single push of a button. I could hear him typing on the keyboard louder than I hear myself scream in this recorded file I have here.
Strange... I'll try the original drivers, tho I fear they may not work on Vista. -

Hello everyone:
I recently bought a compaq F730US with vista home premium , loved it at first but when i realised that I could not use my mic really annoyed me, i have read all the posts here, and decided to register to say a couple things:
Ive seen the posts from ANNA at hp total care....the only useful advice she gave in my situation was to flash the bios, and that didnt fix the mic problem!
Ive seen the links other posters provided as a "fix", they didnt work for me, and I didnt notice a ton of other people saying it worked for them either, one thing Ive learned in the 10 years of being online is dont believe anything based on what someone types in a chat forum...VERIFY FIRST! I thank my lucky stars the "fix" wasnt a virus or worse.
Ok, before i go off on a tangent, let me explain what I think a bunch of folks on here are probably trying to say:
With win2000pro and XP, you used to be able to adjust your mic in and sound out (be it thru speakers or mono out or stereo mix or wave mix) so,,you could hear yourself thru your speakers as a sort of mic check; people that use voice chat and play music know what Im talking about and folks that use skype and yahoo voice chat..Im have a internet radio station so my ability to use my microphone during a broadcast is kinda important.
OK, that being said....
VISTA AND CONEXANT HD AUDIO HAVE TAKEN THAT ABILITY AWAY!!!!!
Im sorry, was that loud? oh well
I cant wait till my sony vaio gets fixed, it has win2000 pro on it, and it worked flawless for me for almost 7 years.
Ok, if ANNA reads this, this is the message i want her to relay back to her engineerinng folks that may or may not be working on the problem.
THE VISTA MIXER ALLOW US TO EITHER USE THE MIC OR WAVE OUT, BUT NOT AT SAME TIME! IF WE USE ONE THE OTHER MUST BE DISABLED.....THAT ISNT THE WAY IT USED TO BE, WE WANT THAT FEATURE TO HAVE THE SAME FLEXIBILTY AS IT DID IN WINDOWS2000/PRO AND XP/PRO....AND NO FLASHING THE BIOS DOES NOT WORK TO INSTALL A FEATURE THAT WAS NEVER THERE TO BEGIN WITH!!!
additional thought: I betcha they forgot to make the sound card FULL DUPLEX. -
Doesn't work with my HP 6601ax laptop. I'm totally disgusted with this. I tried updating drivers and all sorts of updates, the problem is only marginally improved. It is unusable for skype and I can't get a useable recording in Camtasia, even with noise filters applied.
The cheapest and easiest fix is to get a usb soundcard, I've ordered a decent one for around $60au with a headset included. Haven't tried using a bluetooth headset, but I imagine that would bypass the onboard audio issue as well. -
umm. I have the venice but my laptop tells me that no recording device is availabe. I get sound but no recording device wtf.
