    Hi guys,

I have a quick question for y'all. I just purchased a Logitech Z-5500 set and was curious what kind of output I might be able to get out of my sound card. I assume it won't be 5.1 compatible. :( So is there anything I could do to get some HD audio out of this thing?

    Thanks for your help :)

intel HD audio codec support up to 7.1 sound. though your computer need the audio output port/jack to take advantage of it. the Z-5500 should have built-in surround sound "emualation". if you don't have that port/jack and u want true surround sound; you need to buy an external sound card like USB Audigy2NX or PCIMA Audigy2ZS from creative

oh, thats right!!!.... if i'm not mistaken the dv5000t got a SPDIF output, this will not only makes your music sounds better (no distortion, clearer sound, etc.) it will also support surround sound. the Z-5500 has SPDIF input, so if indeed both support SPDIF grab a SPDIF cable and connect both with that. wallla!

Yeah, that'll be no problem. If they ever get here! Newegg says I'll have them by the end of the week, I think they should make Saturday and Sunday business days too :p

And could any of you tell me what a SPDIF output is? I've never heard of that before...

    Thanks!

basically it transfer ur audio data in digital format; so the conversion is done via the Receiver/amplifier; eliminating the degradation in sound quality. it also enable surround sound audio data transfer. the optical on is the best, since there is no "cable" sound degradation, by transfering the audio data via light, but i dont know which one the Dv5000t has, i would guess it is the normal non-optical one.

What are you looking for? Do you just want 5.1 sound out of movies? If so, thats not a problem. The DV5000 has an optical output intergrated into the headphone jack. You'll need an optical cable with mini-TOSlink adapters. Most optical cables come with those adapters. Should only cost you $10.

But if you want 5.1 sound for GAMES, then you'll need another card. The intergrated digital output is only cable of stereo sound output or passing a Dolby Digital or DTS track from a DVD. So you'll need something that is capable or rendering 5.1 channels in real time. If you have a PCMCIA slot in your system, you can get the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook. It can do 5.1 sound out of your notebook for games and it sounds MUCH better than the intergrated sound. It's not audiophile quality, but it sounds pretty good for what it is. You'll want to stay away from USB cards, because they'll have a hugely negative impact on your frame-rates
