How do I make my laptop register that I have connected a desktop monitor to use instead of the laptop screen?

I've tried playing with the display settings and connecting with the windows mobility center but it doesn't work.

The screen is a VW193T Asus

The laptop is a Pavilion dv5
I'm not sure what exact one, though =[

You need a VGA port to connect external monitor and you need to click Fn+ F5 (something).

It's plugged into my laptop through the normal chord that a desktop monitor has... is that the VGA port?
I pressed fn+f4, and a little monitor --> monitor image came up, but it did nothing still.
I also went into NVIDIA control panel and tried to "set up a multiple display', but my laptop doesn't even seem to notice that the screen is plugged in

On a Medion and a Sony its plug&play for me...
    However:

I know that in school people said that you should connect laptop and projector/screen etcetera first, then start the laptop.

I know that in school according to technicians one projector didn't like having running laptops plugged into it...

    May be worth a try.
