    1. The 511mb 511MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS, is it equal, better, worse than the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT?

    2. Do you guys reccomend the 17.0" WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050) or the 17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition Ultra HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900) for this 17" ?

I've also been considering one of the new Dell's, but they have been having many hardware problems, so I went to HP. Thanks.

    1) worse of course

    2) Depends really, if u care for more brightness that you may or may not notice then go for the ultra bright, otherwise the other option is better. the first option gives you a better screen, the second just adds an extra lamp for more light.

the advantage of the new dells is that they have the 8600GT which is so much better.

The 511MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS is a bit of a cruel joke played by HP.

The true amount of memory dedicated to the card is NOT 511 Mb, it is quite a bit less. Most of the video memory is allocated from system memory.

HP and NVidia have partnered to produce the first dedicated/nondedicated graphics card to which HP likes to infer as dedicated for marketing purposes.

My system's WEI is 4.6, solely because of mediocre graphics performance.

Yes, I would get the dv9500t if it had a 8600 GT in :(

If you're not looking for a gaming machine, the card is still a decent choice for running Vista.

I have a Dell 15.4" on order with the 8600 GT card (which itself is 'crippled' with DDR2 memory instead of the faster GDDR3 memory), but I am considering canceling it and ordering a dv9500t from Costco. My total wait time for the Dell is approaching a month. :(
