I am considering purchasing the HP Pavilion dv5t. There are some really good upgrades being offered now. My only concern is that I have a Sony DV camcorder (with the mini-dv tapes). I have got a ton of the tapes which I need to transfer to a laptop and burn onto DVD. There is a IEEE-1384 (DV) output on the camcorder. I notice that the HP dv5t doesn't have a IEEE-1384 compatible input included. You can add a special graphics card which has firewire for an extra $100, but I don't really want to spend another $100 bucks if I can avoid it.
Also, I notice that a cable was included with my camcorder that plugs into the IEEE-1384 output on the camcorder and the other end has a plug that looks like USB. I am not sure what this is.
    Any advice?

Firewire is the only way to transfer the contents of mini-DV tapes to a PC. I would recommend that you not buy a PC without a Firewire port. The only other option that I can think of would be to use another PC that does have Firewire to transfer the tapes and then move those files onto a portable hard drive which you could then connect to your laptop to edit.

Why do you say that firewire is the only way to transfer? Why couldn't I transfer over USB? As I mentioned, I have a cable which came with the camera and it has a USB connector on one end. According to the camcorder manual, the video can be transferred over firewire or USB. There is only one DV output, so there is probably a setting to configure the DV output as either firewire or USB.
    thanks.
