My HP DV2000 yesterday started making a mind-numbingly loud buzzing noise (I have been using earplugs) as soon as it was turned on. From my research, the best I can tell is that it's being caused by a loose or faulty speaker cable. I've tried all of the obvious software fixes (drivers, system restore, muting, etc.) and nothing affects the noise. If I pull out the power cable, the pitch lowers, which I assume is because of the reduced power coming from the battery versus the power cable.

I have a reasonable amount of mechanical aptitude and have performed a number of hardware repairs on desktop computers. Does anyone know if detaching the speaker cable (if that's the solution) would be a simple enough thing to do, or should I just not even try, and take it to a professional? I've looked at the maintenance and repair manual, and it does look like a fair amount of work...

Also, thoughts on alternate fixes? Is there anything I've missed that could stop the buzzing without requiring me to open up the computer?

    Thanks for any help.

In the interest of assisting anyone else who might have the same problem, I thought I'd respond to my own post with the solution. Kind of wish I could have read it before I started, but I managed without any adulteration of the space-time continuum.

In this case, the solution was quite simple. All I had to do, as I suspected, was cut the cables going to the left speaker (the one that was buzzing). It took a while and was enlightening (thanks, HP technicians, for putting some screws back in the wrong places and losing others), but I got it back together, and it's quiet now. No brainer, but one working speaker is so much better than one working and one blaring.

The larger mind numbing question is if a replacement speaker would solve the issue, or was it a hardware issue within the onboard sound output?

These are the things that fitful dreams are made of .... :)

Just figured I'd drop by and mention that I seem to have found a cause & solution to this problem, at least on my Compaq F700 (same M/B and components as DV6000/9000, similar to DV2000). The power button board ribbon cable - which also drives the speakers - is to blame. Flimsy p.o.s... I wonder how much headache that thing has caused people!
