I have been trying to revive an old HP Pavilion DV6 I had laying around, so far so good but the wifi keeps failing after just a couple of minutes.
Full details:
- Windows 7 64 bit freshly installed
- All available updates installed via Windows Update
- All important drivers installed such as wifi, ethernet, graphics, touch controls, sounds, SD card etc.
- All directx updates installed
- .Dot Net frameworks updated (Windows Update)
After doing all of this I have noticed that the wifi keeps dying after just a few minutes. I did not disconnect from the wifi. I did not turn off the wifi adapter. I did not do anything that would cause wifi to stop working.
I checked device manager and disabled "allow PC to turn off to save battery" for the wifi card and the PCI controller.
Lastly, I noticed the wifi card was becoming very hot just after a few minutes so I put some thermal padding on it. I have no idea if that would help but it couldn't hurt, right?
The issue with wifi dying after a few minutes still persists, meanwhile ethernet works really well.
More information:
- Windows 7 64 bit
- 4GB ram
- Intel HD graphics
- WIFI Link BGN 1000 with driver version 13.1.1.1
- 2.5 Sata 128GB Lexar SSD
So this leads me to me ask for help here. Can this issue be fixed? Alternatively, can I upgrade the wifi card on this laptop? What model should I get?

Replacing the card would be a good idea. If you have the model info from device manager that will give us an idea on which card to go with. Upgrading from W7 would help open up the options as drivers tend to not be available for it these days.

Sorry but Windows 10 is absolutely insufferable. I will be using W7 until the very end.
I wrote above, the wifi card this laptop has is called WIFI Link BGN 1000 with driver 13.1.1.1 -
Missed the info on the card. BGN is pretty old when it comes to WiFi. Probably recommend a 7260ac or a realtek. I'm guessing the card is a half mini which is a bit on the chunkier side compared to the newer M2 cards. Would be a good idea to crack the case and verify with a photo to be sure before picking a new one. They're only about $10.

This is absolutely incorrect. Unless that is you're trying to running a very old and out dated PC on it...
Enjoy your self imposed suffering.
