So, I just got my laptop back from the shop after a motherboard failure. Bring it home, it acts absolutely normally until, all of a sudden, a loud, annoying, constant buzzing sound commences. This happened while it was unattended.

Whether I shut down or not, no matter what I do including removing the battery, unplugging all cords, running diagnostics and checks, disabling USB hubs as someone suggested... nothing works. I've heard something about disabling CPU 4 on Intel AMD Duo Core processors, but don't know if it's applicable or how to do it. Muting the computer does nothing, but the sound seems to be coming from the left side of the laptop, near the speakers at the top.

Oh, so I should downgrade if I'm on Vista? Or did you mean it works on both?

    And thanks.

Ah, it's still doing it. I'm probably gonna take it to the shop, it may very well be the fan, yes it's an AMD processor, but the standard fixes for the AMD processor ain't working.

i read somewhere that it could be the way the AMD processor's manage power while idle. Did you try that also?

Yes ...... it looks like you read the link I posted above...

The noise has to do with CPU power management. (C3 & C4) sleep states.
