I have heard stories about overheating problems with the P4 HTs in the zd7000. Is it true that they overheat and burn themselves up? If so do they need external cooling pads. And do these external pads really work?

Plus how often do the rechargeable 12 cell batteries on laptops need to be replaced - 1 yr, 2yrs or never?

Of course that all depends on how often it is used on battery power.
I never could find any specs on pretty much any of the batteries as far as life, but the Dell's say 500 charges on a 12-cell and 300 on an 8-cell.

Quikster - Is it ok to run the notebook off a wall plug without the battery installed? I have heard that the battery is also used as a form of voltage regulator, so its safer to run the notebook from a wall plug with the battery installed.

Any thoughts on cooling reqs for notebooks using P4 HT chips?

Yes, notebooks can run on AC without batteries. The power cord has teh regulator built-in. This has been my experience with dozens of notebooks, there may be some that don't work this way.

Brian is correct, in fact you should run it from the wall if you are not going to be using your battery for an extended time.
