There is only a $50 price difference between the two. Is the T5600 noticeably faster than the T5300 and worth the extra money? Also, is one more susceptible to making the whining sound over the other?

if theyre both C2D then both have the same chances and for the most part the noise isnt all that annoying or noticeable. pay the $50 and get the one u want

yeah i got a T7200 too! think we can sue cuz of discrimination? hehe

The T5600 will be about 6% faster than the T5300. Your $50 may be better spent of more RAM or a bigger / faster HDD.

I believe the whining noise is caused by capacitors and would not be different between these two processors.

If it's only a $50 upgrade, I'd get the T5600, I've only had good experiences with this chip.

If the T5600 is only 6% faster than the T5300, it doesn't seem like it would be a very noticeable difference. I may just go with the T5300 and save 50 bux, and I'm already planning on getting the maximum ram of 2GB.

Go for the Merom XE X7900 (LOL!).

Getting more ram will improve performance.
    Core 2 Duo
    1.66g ghz + 2GB ram (A)VS Core 2 Duo 1.83 Ghz + 1GB ram. (B)

A will be "faster" in moving data from the hdd to the ram and so on. So save that $50 and get a nice stick of 1GB ram and 1GB memory key if you're running Vista.
