I'm deciding if I want to return my unopened copy of Battlefield Bad Company 2 for the xbox since I just bought the envy 15 yesterday (ships on 3/16).

I know the 5830 is comparable to a 260M w/o OCing. i'll prob play it at 720p instead of the full 1080. Could i max it at 720?

The specs for Bad Company 2 are:
    System Requirements
    Minimum:

    OS: Windows XP
    Processor: Core 2 Duo @ 2.0GHz
    Memory: 2GB
Graphics: 256 MB Video Card (GeForce 7800 GT / ATI X1900)
    DirectX®: DirectX 9, 10, and 11 support
    Hard Drive: 15 GB
    Recommended:

OS: Windows Vista or Windows 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or higher
    Memory: 2GB
Graphics: 512 MB Video Card (GeForce GTX 260/ ATI Radeon 4870)
Controller Support: Support for Logitech G15 and G19 keyboard LCDs in multiplayer

Yes you will be able to play it, but not maxed at native resolution. Perhaps with all the extra effects toned down you will be able to play at native resolution. (1920 x 1080)

Lulz in the same boat as you TC. I ordered my envy one day before you and I've got a crap load of games that I wanna try out (starcraft 2 beta, mass effect 2, etc, etc)

The benchmark thread is great and all but not much interest in games. Just synthetic tests.

i can do crysis, dawn of war 2, and maybe a few other games here and there. i can bench the bad company 2 beta too before i decide to buy it. also, i'll hopefully get my own sc2 beta invite, so i'll bench that too. according to gamespot's bench, a 9600 gt can max sc2 at 1080 at 29fps. a 5830 is approx 3 times more powerful

i'll bench them at 720, 900, and 1080 all on highest

I've played BFBC2 and the game is playable at medium settings, but there are instances where the frame rate just drops below 20. Average on 1920x1080 DX11 all settings medium, except shadows: low, texture: high, the avg is about 30.

oh ok. could u do a test for me/everyone here:

    run it at 720, 900, and 1080
at 720, can u max it and get 30-60 fps?
at 900, can you max it and get 30-60 fps?

Starcraft II runs really well maxed out. Mass Effect is good too.

I ran the Bad Company II beta and to be honest, I can't tell you what the graphics were like because the servers were so laggy, and the game in general just fellt buggy and rushed. With all the lag, I felt like I was getting 5 fps, but it didn't matter what settings I was using.

As far as I can tell, it will play it at 1080p though if you tone down some settings, and 720p definitely. The real question is whether it is worth buying the game in the first place.

    I just finished Dragon Age.

everything maxxed with 2AA. I OC'ed my 4830 to 520/950 and was able to maintain 28-40 FPS. Some instance it would drop, but other wise totaly playable.

Coming from a MBP and then gaming on this is a dream. I don't know how I ever convinced my self low setings when gaming was great. Must have been that Apple kool Aid.

The game is arriving next week or so. It is being shipped! Also my benchmarks will be with 720p only. I got the low-resolution screen (on purpose).

I'll be firing up some benches as well once I receive mine tomorrow. I am quite interested in seeing how this thing performs compared to my Dell XPS M1730.

I bought BadCompany2 yesterday and installed it on my Envy 15 with a 5830 GPU, core i7 CPU and 8GB RAM.

Playing at 1080p resolution and medium graphics settnings works like a charm. No reduction in performance in intense situations.

I am using the Catalyst 10.3 prerelease drivers.

Think there will be a difference (in BF2:BC) between the i7 1.6GHz and the i5 2.4GHz? I think I can afford the faster i5 but not the i7.

no there's not much of a performance gain in games. in cpu-heavy processing yes (decoding, folding, etc), but most games don't see much of a boost

I think BFBC2 would definitely put the extra 2 cores in to practice. Especially in action intensive situations.

well, i guess from a purchasing standpoint, i didn't think it was worth it for the i7. that doesn't mean bfbc2 won't use the extra cores to process physics and what not.

i still think that if there's a bottleneck, it'll still be the graphics card more than the cpu.

altho based on everyone's experiences so far, u can max it on lower res (720, 900), and play at med at 1080.

med looks almost identical to high according to the link i posted earlier

In pretty much all modern day FPS titles the bottleneck is always the GPU. Always. Unless you've got a really weird rig with like a ancient dual core processor paired with a ati 5800 series card or something.
