    Everyone
I have narrowed my choice of a notebook to the HP DV1000 and Dell 6000. I have tried the DV1000 and like the keyboard and general performance for the dollar. I was ready to purchase DV1000 until a buddy told me about the 6000. I like the light weight of the DV1000 because I will be traveling alot and using the general features. Right now though, the Dell 6000 is cheaper than the DV and is more powerful though heavier by about 1.5pounds and a bigger footprint is it that noticeable?

2 yr warranty 2 year warranty

I have read the Dell has great battery life which is important. Also I am inishing school soon so I can still use the APP discount for HP, thats how I got this price.
I also have a fairly good opinion of HP and genrally a low one of Dell, though I have yet to purchase a Dell.
    My thanks for your help

Dell actually gets ranked consistently ahead of HP in all consumer satisfaction surveys, they are on the average better than HP for support.

However, the i6000 is not easy to carry around and I like the dv1000 over the i6000 for your needs...it's simply much more mobile that is made for toting around. And it's nicer looking to boot.

    Thank gentlemen

I have been going in between the two sites now all night. I can still use my student discount at HP until the March 4th so that tends to even up the price a bit. I just wish I could see in person a 6000. Abaxter are you currently using a 6000? I keep telling myself[|)] just get the HP but after currently going "whole-hog" on a 6000 with a $750 off the price still is right there with HP.
I should have jumped on the deal when HP was giving an extra battery on the DV1000.
I also have question on the Dell's keyboard feel and reading about Dell's software issues, of course the DV1000 went through some "growing pains."
    Thank you once again

*maybe HP will let me use a $25 coupon, or Fat wallet will allow the discount on the APP site.

It is amazing that the worlds largest computer company "DELL' expects its customers to buy its products solely on photos in advertisements or someone elses similar laptop /computers if they are lucky enough to find a similar one with their friends and can play around with it.
I would never buy a computer until I got the complete feel of it at a retailer

I don't know what you plan to do with your laptop but I actually bought the DV1000 prior to the Dell i6k. I returned the DV1k 1 week after owning it. I had 2 6 cell bateries for a decent battery life but I am definitely happy with my two 9 cell batteries on the I6k. Sound was definitely better on the DV1k. Image quality is superior on the i6k but there is no Brightview option. I have been happy with Dell's service which in my own experience is in line with HPs superior service.

The extra weight is neglible when you consider that you have to carry 2 6 cell batteries or 1 12 cell battery. I am definitely happier with the i6k.

These two were amongst my considerations as well and though you won't see the 6000 at a Dell kiosk you can see the model (8600?) it is replacing for an idea of size and weight and they should have a model or two with the new styling. The styling is improved but I still don't like it; the white just looks out of place but that's not really all that important. As I said, it's an imporivement over the grey/blue scheme IMO.

As for weight and size the difference is going to be very noticeable. If you are looking for something more mobile, I woudl steer you towards the dv1000 (or Compaq v2000). Good luck.

    Thank you everyone

Since I will need this to stay mobile I'm leaning towards the DV1K. I like the looks of it better and its lighter. To test the differences in size I cut cardboard to match the dimensions of both units. I don't think the 6000 will easily fit on the tray table in a plane.
But, I just can't get over the fact I could get a better CPU, a graphics card, faster memory for a better price.[ :(] I do take some solace from what I have read the Dell doesn't "feel" as nice?..?
Have to decide soon, because I need to take advantage of HP's APP discount. I wonder if I call them and try to dicker will they come down on the price?[?]
Oh well I thank everyone and sorry about the writing but the stuff the doctor gave me to knock out a stomach virus has thrown me loopy for the past two days. Nothing spending money while under the inFLUence[ :)]

On a recent 2 hr plane trip in economy class,my next passenger in the middle seat of a 3x3 plane, whipped out his Dell 9200 !!
What a monster it looked in that cramped seat. When the front seat was reclined back fully(which you cannot say 'no' to the front passenger) the monster just poked you in your stomach to keep the screen vertical.
If you are a economy class traveller, better restrict your screen size to 14" maximum OR travel first class !!

Cloewe, just wondering if you made your decision yet? I am in the same boat as you (except I like the v2000 rather than the dv1000). The Dell is cheaper and comes with better gfx card, cpu, etc. as you had mentioned. I did like the brightview feature I saw on an HP at Best Buy. It is a disappointment that I can't see the i6000 in person before I buy, especially since the current coupons expire tomorrow.

I'm only consistently playing World of Warcraft, Rise of Nations and will be getting Pirates! soon. If I want to play a gfx intensive game, I will play it on my desktop. I hear that WoW does run on the dv1000/v2000 albeit at the lowest settings. I'm guessing RoN and Pirates! would run on it as well too. The main use for the laptop will be word processing, spreadsheets and DVD movies while sitting on the train for 2 hours each day and internet browsing at home.

    Ya gooter,
thats what the laptop is meant to be for, office applications and dvds 'on the move'.All the heavy graphics, gaming and editing is best left to a desktop. But we have the "SUV" syndrome. So the laptops have become lap-monsters [ :D][ :D][ :D]

I went for the DV1000, it was difficult because of the Dell deal. But after cutting out the laptop's outline and laying on my desk it was obvious the smaller size of the DV1K was for me. I also tried to cut a better deal with a rep by letting on I was interested in 6000 they threw in more RAM. So I'll try it out, and hopefully it will be in front of clients[ ;)].
    Thanks everyone for your input

You know what? I did that same thing today. Made one large cutout out of paper that demonstrated the sizes of both. Even taped another sheet to one end to simulate the lid. Anyway, I did this to see how much room I'd have in the seat on the train... where my primary use will be. Turns out that one inch difference really makes a difference. The v2000 is a better size for me since I'll be using it on the train a lot. What other laptops do you recommend that are around the size of the v2000, preferably a widescreen and a standard size keyboard?

    Thanks

I can't think of many laptops with a decent size keyboard and good sreen size. The 700 Dell is to small, a couple of IBM's very good keyboard but I think you'll have go with a 12" screen on either. Fujitisu? is a nice one not sure of the keyboard though, Sager 3790 but your now in a different price range, I think a Gateway has good setup but not sure of which.
Nice thing about the HP/Compaq DV-V pair they are unique in thier feature per dollar. They also appear to have good to great ratings.
    Good Luck
