Yeah, so, here I am 3 months after researching laptops and I still haven't bought one. I've all BUT bought one. Been looking at the HP/Compaq zx5000/r3000t recently, and that is currently my top choice. My one concern about the lappy, though, is the battery life. I know it's been asked many a times up until now, but most everyone is interested in getting one of the P4s w/HT.

Well I don't need HT. I know this for a fact, considering that I don't intend to use this laptop in a way that would warrant the use. So I'm wondering if the fact that I'd be going with the only non-HT processor available manage to extend my battery life indefinately into the 3hr mark (counting all the power management tricks I might need to pull).

Just recently I've stumbled across teh compal cl56 with 9700 w/128 ram, which I can get for sub $1500 from mwave. I've stated before that gaming, which I will do on whatever laptop I buy for sure, is not the main function. The only things I intend to do on battery are word documents, work on Finale, and do some internet browsing (not gaming on a non PM machine on battery). If the HP can afford me 3hrs, then I don't need to worry about the compal. If 2 1/2 looks iffy for the non HT P4, then I'm going to have to start re-evaluating my budget.

So? what says the opinion/knowledge of all you gurus laughing at my plight? Outside evaluations are appreciated greatly [ :D]

with my screen at full brightness with nornal non gaming use I can get about 2 hours 45minutes so I think if you turn down the brightness some its easy to get 3 hours and I have HT. I think if you got a non HT proeccsor it would give you a little more battery life, I don't know exactly but with both being P4 desktop chips the difference will be small. I would recommend getting the faster chip if you have the money with the HT and turn it off it your concerned with it burning up to much power. With my system I can safly say I will get 3 hours of battery life with the brightness on level 5 of 10. Hope this helps.
