I have a presario cq56 which was given as a gift this Xmas, yesterday it froze and crashed while on Facebook, I turned it off by the power and turned back on, the caps lock f12 and power light all came on but te laptop didn't boot up, I herd the fan come on briefly also. The caps lock light flashes twice then doesn't for a few seconds then flashes twice, it keeps doing this consecutively, I have tried taking battery out etc.. Anyone have any ideas?

Try a hard-reset first. This means unplug the AC-power-supply, get the battery out and press, and hold down, the power-button for atleast 30 seconds. This should clean the complete memory so you can start from fresh.

Many, many thanks aijelt for your quick fix to this mysterious problem, which not even HP are willing to offer to the numerous people reporting this same problem on their HP Support Forum.

If I do the 30 second press with the battery taken out, will it wipe out all of my memory ( my memory aka pictures music videos are not backed up)? my laptop was working fine this morning and when I came home today, the screen wouldnt turn on. The caps lock light was on but when I unplugged it, the light turned off, but the screen still remained blank.

Pictures and music are on the hard drive, not the memory. Performing the 30 second process won't harm the pictures and music.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this simple, yet elusive solution. I was ready to take it in to be gouged by the Geek Squad. However, thanks to your solution, there will be no Geek Squad gouging for our household, and my children get to live another day since I was going to blame them for the entire incident. :)
