Crazy Temps on OMEN 17 an062 with 7700hq/GTX1070

Hi everyone, i'm just wondering if there's something wrong with my laptop or it is just really poorly designed and everyone is having my same issue: on stock, i hit 99C pretty quickly while gaming, i've also repasted it (i've been using liquid metal as well) without big results. I've been forced to undervolt at -125mV but that's not enough, still hitting 95+ easily after a bit of heavy load.
The only way to prevent thermal shut down is to disable HT and keep it at max 2.8GHz, this way it stays around 80C or so.
GPU runs chill at 68-70C, it just hits 75C max when CPU hits 99, because of the heatpipe being boiling, otherwise temps are pretty cool, but that CPU is a nightmare. Fan runs fast and loud, it isn't that clogged, besides even when new was having the same issue, so i don't think that's the problem.
Idle temps are ok, usually around 50C.
Is this "normal" for this model, or is it my specific laptop the problem?

I wouldn't say that's normal, I used to have a 2017 HP Omen 17 with a 7700HQ and 1060 and it ran relative cool especially when undervolted, usually around 80 degrees from memory. Sounds like maybe the chip and cooling solution aren't making good contact or you have a particularly hot chip. If you have the extended warranty maybe get in touch with HP as it shouldn't be requiring HT disabled, mine was running with HT enabled and over 3GHz, usually around 3.1-3.4 from memory all core loaded in games.

 

I'd certainly try getting a replacement heat sink. I've used that combination before on a AW 15r3 and wasn't seeing anything close to that especially on liquid metal.

What you need to understand is that individual chip temperature are not equivalent to total heat output. More than likely it is your 1070 that is overwhelming the cooler as they are shared. the reason for the lower temps on your GPU is more to do with it's larger surface area and not total output. Plus I'm unfamiliar with how the fan curve behaves with the Omen. At some point there is a targeted temperature that each OEM uses and improving contact will only result in lower fan speeds not temps.

For your issue I'd suggest undervolting your GPU first and see how things do under those circumstances and also consider using a cooling pad.
