Alright, this has happened to both the HP laptops that i have owned, the plastic arround the right hinge creaks, when pressure is applied; and when the screen is opened and closed. but on on this side and in that one area everywhere else is fine.
Is this user fault or a common thing with HP laptops?

Im not sure... Im nearing a year soon of owning my dv9700t and i have no creaking. Im also "overgentle" i think with my laptop.
If its in warranty, send it to HP, they will fix it. -
its not the hinge its self, its the plastic cover over the hinge, and the small area of plastic casing infront of it

some WD-40 should solve the problem

To the OP ... try for an enhanced warranty replacement if this is a dv9x00 series. Although the problem speaks about the left hinge, the symptoms it covers do involve a "creaky" sound when closing the laptop cover, so you may be covered on this for one additional year after the end of your original warranty.
