Just spilled a little bit of milk on my laptop. It covered about one third of the keyboard.

I immediately hit the on/off button, but it wasn't entering hibernate fast enough, so I yanked the battery shortly after.

Dried up all the milk, and used compressed air to clean up what was underneath the keys themselves.

I tried to power it on, but nothing happens, even with the power cable plugged in. :(

    Advice?

Umm...uh oh. Do you have an accidental warranty?

Nope, just the basic one year warranty that's standard.

    Great, ain't it?

EDIT: When the power cable was plugged in, at least the light turned on around the port for it.

That's the power cord itself lighting up I think...for some reason HP thinks that is attractive.

Nah, there's a ring around on the notebook itself.

I unplugged the battery, and power cord. It is now proped open, and I'm going to let it dry until at least tomorrow night.

Good luck...though I'd wait longer (play it safe) and give it the best chance to dry out. A hair dryer on low works wonders here...

Won't a hairdryer add more dust to the equation? I had it on low at first, just towards the keyboard, for about 10 seconds, and then second thought it.

Do you recommend 48 hours of zero activity?

I think the suggestion of water + distilled water + plenty of drying time suggested by Xstation is the way to go, although if any milk had time to dry you might want to disassemble it and clean the individual parts.

    Good luck.

Either tonight, or tomorrow night, I'm going to try, and boot up the laptop. If it works, I'll shut it down immediately, then have my friend help me clean it.

Do you recommend cleaning it first, however? I guess I can throw the one year warranty out the window now. :p

I would clean the laptop first and try to make sure everything is in the best possible condition before you try to power it on. All it takes is a little short and your whole computer is hosed. If you really want the best chance to save your laptop, do it right and follow the advice, clean everything to get rid of the milk solids, dry it extremely well and then try powering on.

    Just my two cents

Alright, does the fact that it didn't want to power on last night mean anything? I mean, I just figure because of the moisture, proper conductivity wasn't taking place.

I have to talk to my friend to see if he can help me look at it. He goes to school for this kinda stuff.

Making sure I'm not crazy, the light itself is a part of the laptop, right?

Try take out the RAMs and put them back in, that's how you do it with MacBooks, ha ha...

    It might work.

(and yes, it is part of it)

It was delicious. I had cookies, too.

My little brother was talking to me while I was at the kitchen table with everything. Next thing I knew, the milk was on my keyboard, and I was cursing up a storm.

umm. did u take off the battery when the computer was still on? and u should try to take out the keyboard and see if the milk went in the mother board. its easy to take out the keyboard. take out the battery and theres three screws with the keyboard symbol by it and just unscrew that and pull the top of your keyboard and pull it out. if u spilled your milk by the power button side, that might be why but i dunno.

I yanked it just as it was going into hibernate. I kinda panicked.

Milk went on the right side of the keyboard, then creeped up towards the speakers. It didn't slide over the power button, or anything. The button itself still clicks.

    Update for you guys.

Took out the keyboard, and all of it's keys. Gave it a good cleaning, then cleaned the plate that the keyboard rests on.

Everything booted up, and is working fine. :D
