Current Notebook BIOS List - HP ENVY & HDX
Other HP BIOS threads: Business | Pavilion | Presario, G-series, Mini | Tablet PC

Last Updated: December 17, 2014

IMPORTANT: An updated BIOS may be available for your notebook PC that addresses several UEFI EDK2 security vulnerabilities. Please CLICK HERE for more information. This BIOS thread will also be updated with the new releases as time permits.

Here is an updated list of BIOS releases available for all relatively recent HP ENVY and HP HDX notebooks. All of the BIOS images linked from here are original and unmodified, hosted at HP's very own FTP server.

Please refrain from posting BIOS issues in this thread, unless the issue stems from here due to inaccurate information. If you are encountering a specific problem that pertains to the BIOS, please create a separate thread for it in the appropriate forum section. You will likely have a much better chance at receiving a response in doing so. If you find a BIOS update or would like to make a suggestion or request for this thread, please post here.

Important Information

• The BIOS images posted in this thread must be flashed in a Windows environment.
• Only use the BIOS release that is applicable to your particular notebook model. Do NOT attempt to flash a BIOS image that is not supported or designated for your model. Doing so will render your system unusable!
• Be sure to carefully read the guidelines displayed by the BIOS update utility to ensure a successful flash.

Not to thread-crap, but have the newest BIOS updates been fixed so they don't freeze when attempting to institute the update?

Which BIOS update are you referring to (and for which notebook)? I haven't heard of any immediate issues with the most recent versions...

Thanks, wetwillycf. This bios update has fixed ALL of the graphics problems I've been having.

Older screensavers now work, opengl run fasts, and I can once again emulate psx games.

I was considering taking advantage of the return policy, but now I think I'll stick with this. It's an awesome computer that had some definite issues, but now those issues are history.

Anyone have any spare underwear? I just crapped mine.

When I first launched the updater, it hung on the "Initializing" part for about 7 solid minutes, before everything sprung back to life and asked me to confirm that I wanted to do the BIOS update. I did, and it went very smoothly after that.

I have an Envy 17 3D 2000 CTO, and applied the F.16 update. Just a heads up to fellow owners, you may experience the same thing. Don't panic like an enraged monkey like I did.

I have an Envy 17 2000. I got this update to work.

The (crappy) HP support assistant attempted to do the update and failed. It gave no reason as usual for the failure.

I found the swsetup folder and found the most recent folder (sp54076) in there. I manually ran the InsydeFlash.exe 0159BF16.bin. It came up and told me that I could not do the update in power saving GPU mode (That's why HP support assistant failed to do it). I switched graphics modes and tried it again. It rebooted and flashed fine.

I noticed that the update should fix a problem I have been having with resuming from sleep. Yay!

On Envy 14 I have tried multiple times and F23 never went through. Just hangs the laptop.

Are you on F.13 Bios? If so, switch the bios file for F.23 into the installer for F.13. There were some posts regarding this-search for them.

Found a description now. Will try to update and report back later.

Just wondering however, if it is even worth the hassle. Does the F.23 update bring any advantages?

EDIT: Update using the replacement method and it worked fine. It reset my battery wear statistics, hope they will come back at some point.

Just wondering, is HP planning to bring the ability to switch dynamic/fixed graphics to the first generation of Envy 14s? Seems a shame that once the SB versions are out, HP stops updating the first gens.

It's technically in the Advanced BIOS, but the setting is only good for one boot. Then, it resets back to dynamic.

Just a question, why would you want to have a BIOS setting for this? You can switch between either GPU manually and keep a certain GPU on at all times if you wanted.

You can adjust those settings on the laptop without the BIOS.

I've updated to F.23 some time ago (14-1050ca) using the replacement method. The whole thing went over fine and the BIOS works, except for one thing: rebooting the computer doesn't work. If I reboot, the laptop hangs at the HP splash screen and does not respond to any input. Can't get in the settings, can't do anything but force shut it down with the power button (I did get beeps when pressing keys, though). If I power it up after that it boots just fine and doesn't complain about anything.

Since it works and boots fine, it's more of an annoyance than a true problem, but I'm a bit puzzled as to what could cause this. Re-applying F.23 on top of F.23 doesn't sound like a good idea, if the BIOS utility will even let me do it.

EDIT: I should note that I've already reset the BIOS to default to no avail.

Reflashing your BIOS is fine, it re-writes your bios. If there was something wrong before, it'll be overwritten and fixed.

On Windows there's not that much need for a BIOS setting to set the GPU. However, Linux still has many problems handling switchable-graphics systems. By default, if both radeon and intel GPUs are present, the radeon open-source driver is loaded. There are bugs in this driver that prevent the system from booting if the radeon driver is used. There are various workarounds to this, but by far the easiest solution would be to set the Intel integrated graphics card as the default in the BIOS. This works fine now, except that the BIOS setting reverts back to the radeon GPU after each boot. A permanent boot setting would be really helpful in this case.

Forget F.17, let's talk about F.18! :D

11/02/2011
• Added BIOS F.18 for ENVY 17-2XXX ([IMG]).
• Updated table to add support for the upcoming ENVY 17-3XXX ([IMG]).

The ENVY 17-2XXX BIOS update was not supposed to be released yet, but HP has made it available anyway. :)

F.26 installed without a hitch on my Envy 14 12XX. It may take some time for battery bar to show wear... Windows just started to show the correct battery time remaining, but it took about 10 minutes after starting windows for it to readjust.. it previously said 43 mins on 60% charge and now it says > 2 hrs.

So. Running HP Support Assistant notifies me of a new bios update tonight and I decide to go ahead with it. I see an error window pop up stating simply "verify error" and my Envy 14 locks up. After waiting for half an hour or so and the fans still going nuts on the laptop, the only way I can turn the computer off is to unplug and remove the battery. Now when starting, my Envy has a blank screen and the graphics card fan is spinning hign on and off.

Anyone have any similar experiences and a way to fix? Assuming this was the F.26 update (didn't bother looking at what I had before or what the current update was).

@DeathRowMarv: there are several people complaining about this problem. Seems that HP has some problem with the signature of the Bios.
About the blank screen, usually HP bios auto-recover from a semi-brick. In your case, you can try:

Unplug, remove the battery and press the power button 1 minute. Release, plug in and power on.
If that fails: remove the battery, unplug, push win+b, plug in, power on. When the machine starts up, release win+b. What a minute to see what happens.
If that also fails, check this method: How to use the HP BIOS update (uefi) utility - HP Support Forum

Good luck!

This happened to me too. None of the recovery options worked. I posted a thread about this a couple weeks ago (2.0 was helping me out) with no resolution. I determined that it bricked the system, or screwed up the video card somehow, and it couldn't be recovered. I contacted HP and talked to a technician about the issue, but since I was out of warranty, they wanted a crap ton of money ($300+) to fix the issue. Sad to say, even complaining to them about their software update that ruined my system and that they should repair it for no charge, they wouldn't do anything except apologize.

I even had a couple of my fellow IT technicians in Help Desk at my work try to fix it, but couldn't. Glad to hear the recovery option worked for it. It didn't for me. :(

I gave up. Wound up selling it on eBay. Got $300 for it to pay for the new Envy. :)

@chocobo481: did you know that recovery methods they tried? Because roaming the internet I've found two different recovery methods involving USB thumbs: one with a special naming of the bios .bin, and another creating the whole HP_TOOLS set inside the USB drive. On both of them they recommend to remove the battery but also the hard disc.

Edit: about the root of the problem (HP pushing an update that bricked the laptop) I can recommend you to send them a letter, signed, explaining the situation. I you have luck someone from Customer Satisfaction could pick up the problem and work up a solution (that happened to me BTW).

Yeah, I tried it all. 2.0 was giving me a lot of options and methods to try, but none of them worked.

A great idea about the letter, but I already sold the laptop and got some pretty good money for it.

Could anyone with an ENVY-15-3XXX and under BIOS F.04 make a backup of its HP_TOOLS partition and upload it somewhere??? I deleted the partition when doing a fresh install of Windows and upgraded to the buggy F.06 BIOS and now I want to rollback to F.04 but there's no link available in HP's website...
