I use my notebook mainly for school. I don't really game which is why I'd rather downgrade to the 9200m gs. But I do have a Blu-Ray player built-in, so there's the issue...
Here is the specs on my current one...
-Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 (2.53 Ghz)
-Nvidia 512mb GeForce 9600m GT
Changing those 2 into these...
-Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4 Ghz)
-Nvidia 256mb GeForce 9200m GS
I have a high-capacity 6 cell and I'm sure battery life will be greatly better and heat will go down quite a bit. But I also have a Blu-Ray player, does anyone with a 9200m GS have a Blu-Ray player? If so, could you tell me how it runs? Is it very smooth? It does support it, I know that, but I want to know if the computer struggles or something?
I'm gonna try to make a few adjustments with my case manager...
Please let me know, thanks.

I don't have a 9200M GS, but i'm pretty sure bluray will run fine on it. As for the processor swap, that's a good choice. You might get around 3 hours on the high cap 6 battery when you run on power saver. I tested mine just by idling and typing a few words every minute, I have an undervolted P8600 and 9600M GT, it lasted about 2 hours and 40 minutes. When I was in high performance while playing a movie, it lasted about 1 hour 25 minutes before the screen shut down.
-
Do you think I should just keep my 9600m gt and swap the CPU only?
I do plan on getting the 1680x1050 infinity display to replace my 1280x800 infinity...
I'm thinking the warmth is really coming from the HD in the first place...but I'd rather have longer battery life than a powerful 9600m gt when i hardly play games...
so maybe the 9200m gs would be good enough, even as a future proof, I'm sure it'll run the system fine... -
Under your conditions, I would swap both the GPU and CPU for lower. I'm sure the 9200M GS won't have problems running bluray. And definitely get the 1680x1050 display, it is one of the best upgrades imo. Just love having all that space.
-
Get the DV2700T then. The battery lasts 7 hours.
-
Well it has to be the same laptop model...I'll definately be getting these specs...I'll let you guys know on Tuesday...

-High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery [Same] -
uhmm nooo...
They use screen size as a factor. You can't upgrade the screen size, but they will let you downgrade the size. The DV2700T is better than the DV4T in terms of battery life. If you chose a smaller screen maybe the case manager would fully max it out? -
I have the 9200 with Blue-ray and it runs beautifully...
-
Thank you uncming, I appreciate your post. I just wanted someone who has a 9200m gs and bluray to state how well it runs...
I have no doubt that the 9200m gs could handle it, I was just curious about how smooth and easily it handles bluray movies.
I'll have to wait until Tuesday to talk to my case manager...although she did hint that she would most likely replace it with a new one...I'll just mention some "downgrades" and definately upgrading my screen to a 1680x1050 WSXGA+ infinity display and HD to 320 gb since I'm downgrading my CPU and GPU.
I've timed it, and after using the laptop for 45 minutes, it gets extremely hot, especially the keyboard, touchpad, and palm rest gets unbearably hot on my notebook. Anyway, I'll get this fixed up next week.
**uncming, we'll have pretty much the same specs...how do you like the wsxga+ infinity? The infinity options looks real sleek, but makes it seem kinda dull in the daylight...but at night it's a beauty. -
Just curious...did you use a coupon when you ordered? I wanted to return and exchange mine for the bigger resolution, but they wanted to charge me the full price because they said that the coupon is expired. I tried to argue that they should still honor the same coupon because I'm just getting it replaced, but no luck. Let me know how the exchange process goes for you.
-
Actually this is a replacement for an older notebook. Sorry abl3051. Did you try asking for a case manager? I know what you mean about the screen resolution...1280x800 seems to be really constricting on a 15.4" screen. Wish 1440x900 came standard on these...
But I'm hoping my case mananger is willing to replace the notebook instead of sending it in for repairs...I'll definately try my hardest to push for a replacement since it was brand new and it already had problems...
I'll post back on Tuesday night... -
They might be hesitant about the screen. They usually don't upgrade the screen or provide a lot of opposition. Some might, but more don't touch the screen.
-
Thanks for the inputs guys, but after having the T9400 and 9600m gt, I decided having a slightly slower notebook is a no go for me. Fortunately, my case manager upgraded my screen without downgrades to the WSXGA+ Infinity Display...so I'm super happy...I freakin love HP.
She even offered to give me the dv7t, but I really need something more portable. I almost bit the bullet though as I really love the dv7t's massiveness. Unfortunately, I'm a student haha. Here are the specs below...
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9400 (2.53 GHz)
15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Infinity Display (1680 x 1050)
FREE Upgrade to 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
FREE Upgrade to 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
[For BrightView Infinity Display] Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
HP Color Matching Keyboard
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
Integrated 56K Modem
Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery -

I know, I'm really excited...this is gonna be a looooong wait uncming. The speed of the processor is just perfect and the graphics card is overkill for me, but I might as well spoil myself just in case a good pc game comes out...
Crysis runs really great on it on Directx 10 mode...I'm waiting for StarCraft 2, which I'm sure won't tax it as much...
By the way, uncming, can you fit 2 internet explorers side by side without feeling cramped? I'm mostly excited about all that space...I might not even know what to do with it. -
Just chiming in . . . The 9200 will playback HD . . . but don't expect it to do it wonderfully. I would pay for the better card in that respect, and trim back the processor.
-
Thanks mgh a1...I already got the 9600m gt...kept the 2.53 GHz T9400 CPU...

Did you get the 1680X1050 screen the PLAIN one or the Infinity! Waste of $50 for the Thick Plastic cover ... and in my opinion it does not look that slick. Have you seen the infinity in person ... Best Buy has dv5t with Infinity screen.
The Nvidia 9600 much better than 9200 ... and I am not sure if the 9200 would run any cooler. Check around and see actual Temps ... Plus read this article ...
http://laptopcom.blogspot.com/2008/06/nvidia-geforce-9m-series-40-percent.html
The P8600 actually would have run a tad cooler and save some battery life ... but T9400 is shear power.
G! -
Yes! My new notebook is shipping Wednesday which means I should get it by Thursday or Friday.
gonwk, I did get the 1680x1050 Infinity Display...I personally like it a lot. Besides, I rarely work outdoors and mainly indoors. I don't really get problems with reflections too much even in well lit rooms...
And yes, the kept the 9600m GT as well as the T9400 CPU...I can't downgrade anything because it just wouldn't be right! haha. Anyway, I'm mostly excited about the screen. That's the only thing I changed. -
so I'm going to use that money on my Wii instead -
Yea, that's understandable...I would have sacrificed the processor and gpu if I didn't already have a gaming system as well. But I worked my butt off for 2 weeks to be able to buy my PS3 and hdtv. But I game a little on the notebook when I'm away from home.
So, if I was in the market for a ps3, I would definately have lowered the CPU and GPU to save 250 bucks and bought a PS3.
By the way what is that "shaggymac screen/keyboard protector harvest color and matching microfiber wipe"? Mind taking pictures of them for me? I'm really curious. -
Sweet!, my notebook left Anchorage, AK early this afternoon.
The guy at HP said that I should expect it Saturday. I didn't even know they shipped on Saturdays? Could someone confirm this?
Anyway, pretty dang excited. I'm sure it'll be here by 10 am. -
I too have the 9200GS and the P8400.
My WE aero score is 3.0.
It went up to 3.3 after I added ram to 4GB.
I have 2 other dv5's with no vid card and P7350, and their WE aero score is 3.8. -
ttv, just check what your lowest score is and that's what bottlenecks you...
-
My "aero graphics" is the low score. It's 3.0 with 2G ram, and it went up to 3.3 with 4G ram.
The question is; the other 2 DV5's I have, have no vid card, and have P7350 processores. Both have X4500 built in shared video and yet their aero graphics score is 3.8.
Overall, my lowest score is the aero score, so my overall score is 3.0
The lesser built DV5's I have, have an overall score of 3.8
That's why I'm wondering what's going on. -
WEI is not exactly reliable in telling you the performance of videocards. I've seen it a lot, where the integrated cards beat the dedicated-discrete cards. It's all about the drivers and other variables.
It's just Microsoft's way of making it simple for people to check if their system can handle Vista and generally compare systems.
Normally, hardcore gamers or computer users get their performance ratings through benchmarks suchs 3dmark or syssoft, etc.
My current system gets this:
Overall: 5.1
Processor: 5.5
Memory: 5.9
Aero: 5.1
Gaming: 5.4
Hard Disk: 5.4
If you know hardware, then you'll get an idea of performance without the WEI. Just go by benchmarks which you could find online very very easily.
Bottleneck is videocard. -
Overall, the upgraded system "feels" a bit snappier compared to the slower processor and onboard vid card.
Still, I would like to understand WE better and WHY does my score show lower. I just go this laptop, which should have the latest drivers.
I checked with nvidia and apparently I do have the "best" driver.
Still, my score is lower than the onboard shared video.
Again, why?
Is my 9200 card bad? Is there something wrong with it?
What is causing Vista to register a low number?
In terms of "gaming" performance, my WE score is pretty good, it's in the mid to upper 4's. It's the "windows aero graphics" that show a low number.
That's the odd part.
You say "drivers and other variables". But, what are those?
As I said, I have the so called "best" and newest driver for the 9200.
What other variables are there that I can check?
And, why didn't HP check it and set it up?
Why do the 2 other DV5's I have show a higher number, especially the one that I bought together with the upgraded DV5?
I got the first DV5 in August, and I just received the 2 new DV5's this past Friday. They were assembled during the same time frame. -
I wouldn't take too much stock in that WE score...its really Microsoft's view. I would go with how the system "feels" to you, playing games, surfing, graphics, etc. -
I'm just curious about this 9200 card.
It's seems the X4500 is quite capable.
I got the 9200 not due to gaming needs, but more so because a dedicated vid card gives the processor a break so that it doesn't need to share processing power for video as the card can do that.
However, is the 9200 less capable overall compared to the X4500?
The 9600GT seems to be a great card.
BTW, the more I use this DV5T, the more pissed I get at the battery.
I am on low power mode and ONLY surfing the web, yet my battery is giving me about 1 hour and 20-25 minutes.
I may send this laptop back just for that.
I like to use it outside and without wires hanging from it.
Afterall, that's THE REASON I bought a laptop so that it can be free from wires. I digress.
Thanks for the input. Let me know what your scores are.
Current dv5t with heat problems...
