I notice on the website that Compaq ships with DDR2-533. The computer comes in a configuration with only a 256 Mb of memory. I could just buy that with 1 Gb (512 x 2) of memory for about the same price they charge for a GB of RAM.
How much of a performance improvement is there between DDR2-533 and DDR2-667? I notice they are roughly the same price these days.

Not sure, but I recommend buying DDR2-667 Crucial memory until someone finds a cheaper brand that's reliable or until SODIMM makers start testing their parts against the much more demanding AMD integrated memory controller. At this point I'm still guessing that Crucial will work, simply because outside of an isolated case or two it's been the most AMD-friendly memory I've found over the years. That and I believe that HP tests against it (I was told by a HP tech that they did, a couple of years ago).

Don't be missleaded by HP's web said. First they said Z with 533 and T with 400. On 6000 and 9000, they mark all in 667. Then recentely, they change all RAM to 533. 667 is included in all models' part list.

Talked with HP/Compaq. Apparently, they only sell DDR2-533 with the Compaq V3000 series even though it can use DDR2-667. Since it's actually cheaper to buy it myself than buy it from HP, you're better off just installing it yourself.

It's almost always cheaper to buy as little as possible and then upgrade, anyway.
