So no matter what power settings or brightness I have it set to, I notice most especially when I'm browsing the internet sometimes when I open a new window the screen brightens even when its set to max brightness....It can get really annoying especially in the dark because my eyes have to constantly readjust. I haven't noticed it when it plugged in.
This is my second notebook, first one was returned due to screen flicker problems and now the second one has this issue along with crackly speakers at less than a week old...so much for Beats Audio. I will be returning this one as well and have another on the way. I hope I have better luck with that...it will be my 5th notebook in the past month. I've already bought and returned a Samsung NP305U and Acer TimelineX 1830Tz due to faulty wifi adapters, and now will have returned two of these. I'm almost wanting to try something else but need to stick in the 11.6 inch range but I've exhausted almost all my options...

Well all that seems very unlikely, I have never had such bad luck. I think the problem is between the laptop and the chair. lol

Yea, me neither until now...My previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 1420 which was pretty good but then crapped out due to being dropped multiple times and had a shattered screen.
Then I had a HP Mini 311 which had a good run, eventually crapped out as well with no recovery option. I had extended warranty and got back $250 after using it for a little over 2 years.
Currently I've got a Mini 210 which is a pretty sturdy little thing depite suffering more than its share of abuse, although its pretty underpowered. Thats why I need something a little more powerful in a small size factor. What do you mean by "the laptop and the chair"??
I just re-read where you said it seems unlikely, trust me I wouldn't go through all this hassle for nothing...the Samsung and Acer have known problems specific to those models wifi which you can google, and I was going to get a video of the previous display problem on the HP to post up here to ask for help but then I researched and diagnosed it as the screen flicker problem...The current one I don't know if I'll be able to catch the brightness issue in a video but I can definately get the crackling speakers. This is completely stock factory settings, under a week old with minimal use. -
OK, you need to disable "powerplay" under the power tab in the AMD Catalyst Control Center. I think I had the same problem on a dv6 that had one of those horrible AMD quad cores. I think this will work for you. and as for the crackling you should probably just update the drivers and see how that works and see if the crackling comes out of headphones also. I believe you need to spend more time troubleshooting the problem rather than crying foul and returning the laptop. most things can be fixed because it is usually a user error which is what I was referencing earlier with the comment because a person sets between the chair and laptop. but no offense meant just troubleshoot a little better. let me know how it goes and best of luck

Thanks!! disabling powerplay worked. I probably wouldn't have figured that one on my own because I've never used anything from AMD... and I usually like to just have something working as it should right out the box because I'm not too tech savvy, this notebook is probably the most powerful computer I've ever had...I will further troubleshoot the speakers and see if the distorted audio was only from that specific source or is its across the board.

Im glad to have helped, I myself was worried at first too when I had the problem but with experience comes knowledge. Im betting you can get those speakers fixed with a simple driver update.

Just turn off the vari bright in the catalyst control center. Its been like that since day one when I received one of the first new DM1's about 14 months back.
DM1z(Beats Version) randomly brightens....
