first uninstall all sound devices under the device manager tab then reinstall sound drivers, get the latest from hp website. if there is a software problem, that would fix it.

no need to backup anything. go to "Device Manager" (right-click on "Computer", then "Properties", then upper-left corner "Device Manager")
Find the the driver under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers", then right-click on "Conexant High Definition Audio" or whatever sound driver you have, and click "Uninstall", then follow on-screen instruction. Restart your computer.
Go to your HP driver site and download the new Sound Driver and install, reboot and bam. Good Luck!

hmmm, seems llike the sound driver is conflicting with other drivers, we can eliminate the fact that it's not a hardware problem, since you do hear sounds after reboot.

Go back to Device Manager and see if there are any "X" marks on any other drivers. If not, go ahead and uninstall the sound driver again, reboot, this time install the original sound driver (not new updated) and see if anything happens.

You should be able to find the original driver from your recovery dvd or through HP software/driver recovery. Good Luck.

I'm thinking about just reformatting the laptop, just to get any junk that is on it off it... would this fix the problem? And how would I go about this, how difficult is it to do?

obliviously reformat and reinstall windows will solve any problem, if you don't mind the waiting and the hassle of updating your systems/drivers, then go ahead. Be sure to backup your personal data first.
